From Montereau-Fault-Yonne to Moret-sur-Loing, from one confluence to another.

This is the twenty-fifth stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, starting from Montereau station, not far from the confluence of the Seine and the Yonne, and ending at Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons station, not far from the confluence of the Seine and the Loing. The stage, entirely on the GR®11, follows a route on the left bank of the Seine, joining the Orvanne valley a little further south, and returns to Moret-sur-Loing and its beautiful historic centre, following the Canal du Loing on its towpath.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

Description of the walk

Departure from Montereau station, the terminus of a branch of the Transilien R line.

GR®11 white and red markings

(S) Turn left when leaving the station, cross the car park and follow the road along the tracks. Reach and pass under a bridge on the first railway line, a branch of the main line.

(1) Turn right immediately after the bridge, then turn left onto the path to pass under another bridge beneath the main railway line. Turn right after the bridge and walk alongside the tracks for a short distance until you reach a pond in a nature reserve.

(2) Go around the pond using the footpaths, then turn right to reach a school and the town hall of Varennes-sur-Seine. Continue to Place Jean Séjourné.

(3) Turn left, then straight on onto Avenue Albert Grave. Pass two residential entrances and take the next right, Rue Malik Oussekine, towards the Elsa Triolet College and Gymnasium on your left, with natural areas on your right. Pass the gymnasium.

(4) Take the path that branches off to the right across the fields. After passing a ditch, follow Chemin de Nemours to the right until you reach a road, Avenue d'Ormes.

(5) Turn left to follow this road through the marshes and join the D403. Turn right onto this road and continue to the large roundabout with the D606.

(6) Cross with caution: don't hesitate to use the central reservation to cross in two stages. Opposite, join the D120, which branches off to the left, and follow it for about 1 km.

(7) At a slight bend to the right in the road, take the path leading off to the right into the fields. Follow the bend to the left after 200 m and continue along this almost straight path, which climbs very slightly through the fields, passing a few lines of copses from time to time.

(8) Cross a road and then a wooded section and continue straight ahead. After more than 4 km of straight road, you will reach a road at Bas des Hôpitaux after a fairly steep descent. Follow it until you reach the valley road.

(9) Take this road on the right and pass a first crossroads with a calvary. Continue straight ahead, leave a road on the left, then continue straight ahead on the path when the road turns 90° to the right. Cross another road a little further on and continue on the path that climbs gently up the hillside.

(10) After passing a small copse on your left, turn left onto the perpendicular path that descends. At the bottom, join the road and follow it to the right. You will reach the hamlet of Pilliers after 500 to 600 metres.

(11) When the main road turns left, continue straight ahead uphill. Continue along the path that extends from it, pass a bundle of power lines and rejoin the D403 a little further on.

(12) Take the Route de Montarlot opposite to cross the hamlet of La Fondoire.

(13) At the end of the hamlet, turn left onto the path leading towards the river and marshes. Cross the marshes on the paths and reach the village of Villecerf on the other side. Continue straight ahead until you reach the church after crossing the D218.

(14) Turn right in front of the church, then immediately left. Follow the road as it climbs slightly. At the three-way junction after leaving the village, take the road on the left to go around Montagne de Trin on your left. Pass the cemetery, then turn left onto a path when the road turns right. Continue along the path at the edge of the Montagne de Trin woods. Pass the Fontaine du Dy farm, visible on the right in the fields, and arrive at a crossroads.

(15) Turn right, heading north, onto the path that leads into the fields. Cross the farmland for about 2 km until you reach the first houses of Écuelles.

(16) At the T-junction, turn right, then left 150 m further on. When you reach a perpendicular road, first turn right then left onto Rue des Châtaigniers, then turn right to reach Place de l'Église.

(17) Head left, take Rue Georges Villette on the left as you leave Place de l'Église, then immediately turn right onto Rue de la Fontaine Saint-Rémy. Continue to the Canal du Loing.

(18) Follow the towpath to the left until you reach the bridge at the lock about 700 metres further on.

(19) Cross the bridge and follow the towpath on the other side to the right, going up the path on the other bank. Continue along the towpath northwards for almost 3 km after passing the D606 bridge and then the Aqueduc de la Vanne bridge. Then join Avenue de Sens, which crosses the canal at a lock.

(20) Follow Avenue de Sens to the left until you reach the bridge over the Loing at the entrance to Moret-sur-Loing.

(21) Cross the bridge to the Porte de Bourgogne.

(22) Go through the Porte de Bourgogne and take the street immediately on the right, then another right to reach the banks of the Loing. Follow the river downstream until you reach the imposing Saint-Mammès railway viaduct. Go under it.

(23) Turn immediately left to walk alongside it. Continue at the foot of the railway embankment towards the station. Leave the GR® trail on the right and continue along the embankment. When you reach the station below, turn left after a property and take the path that climbs the embankment and leads directly to one of the station platforms (the one for Montereau). A tunnel connects to the other platforms (E).

Return: Moret-Veneux-les-Sablonsstation , on the Transilien R line.

Notes

(S) Montereau station, one of the termini of the Transilien R line (main branch from Paris-Lyon on the left bank), as well as its branch operating as a shuttle service from Melun on the right bank. One train per hour on each of these branches, plus a few TER Bourgogne trains.

(E) Moret-Veneux-les Sablons station, at the junction of the Montereau and Montargis branches of the Transilien R line. One train per hour in each direction on each of these two branches, i.e. two trains per hour to Paris from this station. Please note that as the station is located just after the junction of the branches, trains to Paris depart alternately from the platform for the line coming from Montereau and the platform for the line coming from Montargis. A few TER trains may also stop here.

See theÎle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

Be careful when crossing the D606 at (6). Make good use of the central reservation in front of the roundabout to cross the road in two stages: although tricky, this is undoubtedly the safest place to cross the road for several kilometres in either direction.

When you reach the Loing canal (18), the GR® trail turns left, while Moret is on the right. This may seem surprising, as there is a path leading off to the right, but this quickly comes to an end at an industrial estate. You must therefore take the path opposite, which leads to Moret, and to do so you must cross the canal at the bridge at (19).

This stage is not particularly difficult, apart from its length.

Hike completed on 13 July 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
