Description of the walk

Departure from Place de la Mairie (car park), perpendicular to Route du Chef-lieu and located between the church and the post office.

Directional signs at major intersections + a few signposts with yellow arrows

(S/E) From the car park, take Route du Chef-lieu to the right, i.e. away from the church. At a fork, take the left-hand road towards the cheese dairy. Go downhill, ignore a turn-off on the left, leave the cheese dairy on your left and note an oratory on your right before reaching a crossroads.

(1) Then turn right onto Route de Théry towards Les Clouz and follow theGR® Balcon du Léman (red and white markings). Ignore a road on the right. At Les Clouz, make a left-right zigzag to take Chemin des Bandés and cross a residential area.

(2) At the three-way junction, turn left towards Les Granges. At the next three-way junction, turn right and pass under a medium-voltage power line. The tarmac gives way to a shady, stony path. At the corner of a cross dating from 1986, ignore a path on the right (not shown on the IGN map) and you will soon reach a crossroads at Les Granges.

(3) Turn right towards the Chapelle de Champeillant (let theGR® continue straight ahead). Descend gently into a wood and, at the first houses of Sur les Crêts, rejoin the tarmac road.

(4) At the T-junction, follow the small road on the right that climbs towards the Chapelle de Champeillant. Gradually, the chapel and the view of Lake Geneva come into view on the left. After a left-hand bend, you will reach a three-way junction with a signpost.

(5) Turn left towards the chapel and pass the nearby orientation table, then return to the three-way junction.

(5) Returning from the chapel or the orientation table, take the small road on the left (east-northeast), the only one for which the signpost does not indicate any direction. Note the peaks of the Mémises-Oche massif opposite. Ignore the Route de Nattay on the right, then a road on the left, and continue due east.

(6) At the T-junction, follow the D21 road to the right (be careful, this is the only busy section of road). At the crossroads after about 100 metres, turn left. After about 150 metres, leave the D21 and take a small road on the left towards the observatory. At the foot of the observatory (information sign), turn right towards the Bois de Maravant.

(7) At the next junction, turn left uphill. At the next junction, take a path on the right and go around a telecommunications pylon on the left. Continue slightly uphill and you will immediately reach the Perron oratory.

(8) Retrace your steps.

(7) At the crossroads, turn left and follow the small tarmac road eastwards. At the next crossroads, turn right onto Route de Chomieux. At the T-junction, turn left. Walk alongside the farm buildings on your left, then on your right. At the corner of the last building, turn right onto Chemin de l'École. At the crossroads, first turn right then left to return to Place de la Mairie (S/E).

Worth a visit

In Champeillant (incorrectly spelled "Champellant" on the IGN map) (5):
- Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs Chapel, built in 1924.
- Orientation table, with a view of the Chablais peaks and Mont Blanc (in good weather).
- Information panels providing details about the geology of the region.
- Commemorative plaque in honour of American airmen who made an emergency landing here during the Second World War.
- Benches and tables for a rest stop.

- Observatory of the Société Astronomique du Léman, between (6) and (7).

- Oratoire du Perron (8). Erected in 1868, the inscription on it takes us back to the time of indulgences...

The route is interesting with beautiful views of Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Near the chapel, the orientation table is very well designed, with clear directions and a realistic view of the mountains. The hike is suitable for young children, as there is little elevation gain. It's a shame that three-quarters of the route is on tarmac roads.

Beautiful views of Lake Geneva, but it's a shame that so much of the route is paved.

Very nice route. Well explained. With a magnificent view of Lake Geneva near the chapel, and you can also see Mont Blanc.

Accustomed to tackling this route and its variants outside of winter, we completed it on snowshoes in black wind conditions (strong wind and heavy, fresh, crusty snow) and took a few liberties with the route (starting from the Vinzier stadium and returning across fields).

There were no difficulties other than the bitter cold and the lack of visibility of the surrounding mountains, but that wasn't the objective.

The circular route can be done easily in either direction, with the arrival at the Champeillant Chapel being a goal in itself.

Recommended before enjoying a nice hot meal.

Be careful on the access roads at the start of the circular due to snowdrifts: two vehicles were stuck in the ditch...

We were lucky enough to enjoy a very pleasant walk in the sunshine at the beginning of January. It was a very pleasant open-air route, which is important at this time of year when it's important to make the most of the sunshine. There were lots of people approaching the chapel and lots of cars on the road, which isn't very wide.
I appreciate the very precise description, very good work.

In fact, we regularly walk around Vinzier, but this is a longer route – about 3 hours, with a 120-metre elevation gain – proposed in 2006 by the Lou Vionnets association. The route is fully signposted.
Start from the Super U car park, then head north-north-west towards the Lyonnet plain, return to Les Granges, then Bois du Ban, Pré Plagnat, at the next intersection head south towards Chez Portay, continue to the intersection at an altitude of 849 metres.
Then head towards the Champeillant chapel.
Descend to Les Crets (861) then Les Granges (note: this is not the same landmark as Les Granges mentioned above; it is the southernmost point of the hike, see map), then head north to pass the observatory and return to the car park.
You can make a short round trip to the Perron oratory between the observatory and the car park.
Beautiful views in good weather!
Mark this route on a map, as a sketch is better than a description.

The date isn't exact, but I think it was early October.

It's a very pleasant hike, but it's REALLY worth doing in good weather.

In fact, I was left a little disappointed at the Champeillan orientation table.
The 360° panorama is magnificent, but the cloudy weather spoiled some of the fun for me.
