Circular walk at the foot of Mont Baron starting from Prébuza

An easy walk but with fairly significant elevation changes and a walking time of nearly
5 hours. Beautiful views over the Gavot plateau, Lake Geneva, the Jura and Switzerland, the Dent d’Oche massif, the mountain pastures and the Abondance valley. The final section, along a road (with very little traffic), is the least pleasant.

Please note: 8 August 2026, new report from a user => Important information: access to the summit of Mont Baron is strictly prohibited.

From Chevenoz, head up to Prebuza and park at the end of the tarmac road (car park near a water tank).

(S/E) Take the path that climbs through the woods towards Le Petit Chesnay (GR®® red and white markings). Stay on the marked path, which climbs steeply through the woods, and ignore any side trails. Leave the woods, go through a gate and you’ll reach the barns at Sur Les Trables.

(1) Continue due east along the track through the mountain pasture. Carry on through the woods towards Le Petit Chesnay (GR®® markings).

(2) At Le Petit Chesnay, follow the signposted path which descends slightly to the left. Continue eastwards along this path to Le Grand Chesnay (drinking water, beautiful panoramic views of the Pays Gavot, Lake Geneva and Switzerland).

(3) Continue eastwards across the mountain pasture. There is a lovely view of the Dent d’Oche and the Roc du Château d’Oche.

(4) At the Croix du Grand Chesnay, turn right towards the Col des Bœufs. After a short descent (ignore a path branching off to the left) followed by a climb up towards the spruce trees, you’ll reach the foot of Mont Baron, from where you can see the other side of the mountain (the Abondance valley) with a glimpse of Mont Blanc.

(5) Descend towards the Col des Bœufs (leaving the path on your left that climbs between the rocks towards Mont Baron).

(6) At the Col des Bœufs, leave theGR®® and turn right (south-west) towards Les Grandes Heures and Vacheresse. Shortly afterwards, join a track suitable for vehicles and follow it south-west (ignore the track on the left towards Les Grandes Heures). Pass the Chalets des Bœufs and descend in hairpin bends along the main track.

(7) At a hairpin bend to the left, ignore the turn-off to the right towards La Croix / Le Fontany and continue along the main track towards Taverole. Almost immediately, you’ll come to a fountain between two chalets. In front of the last of these chalets, leave the main track and follow a path to the right which descends into the woods towards Taverole behind the chalet.

(8) At the junction, pass the first uphill path on your right, then shortly afterwards a second one. Continue downhill to the Ruisseau de Taverolle.

(9) Then turn left and follow the stream downhill. The path turns into a tarmac road leading down towards the hamlet. At the first hairpin bend to the left, leave the road and take the path leading off to the right towards Prébuza (signposted as 45 mins). Follow this shaded, gently ascending path and, after passing a secluded chalet, you’ll reach a crossroads.

(10) Take a steep path on the right. At the end of the short climb, at a T-junction, turn left. Follow the path which passes near scree (quarry) and leads to the hamlet of La Croix. From here, stay on the tarmac road until you reach your destination. Continue along this road (which is not very busy) until you reach a crossroads.

(11) Head up the Chez Pollien road, passing beneath an imposing building – a typical Abondance Valley farmhouse – and past an old bread oven (information boards). Leave Chez Pollien behind, pass an old holiday camp and arrive at La Billette (cross).

(12) Continue straight on (west) for about a hundred metres. Take thefirst road on the right, which climbs towards Prébuza. At the junction, go straight on, pass the reservoir and you will immediately reach the car park (S/E).

Important information: access to the summit of Mont Baron is strictly prohibited. We tried to reach it from Vacheresse, but when we arrived at Le Replain, signs indicated that the Boeufs, Mont Baron and Grandes Heures mountain pastures were part of private property and were therefore off-limits to walkers from Vacheresse and Bernex. All the relevant directions on the official beige signs had either been crossed out, covered with tape or replaced.
It seems that the only remaining access to Mont-Baron is via the GR5 circular route, but this has been altered so that it now only reaches the Mont-Baron balcony. Or perhaps in winter…
We didn’t dare go any higher, given the rumours of aggressive dogs…

A route of moderate difficulty; there are a few people at the summit, but this is because they’ve taken a different route.

Warning!!!
Hike done in the opposite direction on 13 June 2025.
Shortly after Le Replain and before arriving at Les Boeufs, there is a fence with signs saying: Private property. No trespassing. Beware of dog.
I imagine that during the alpine grazing season, access to Les Boeufs is prohibited.

A good route to get the season underway: a gradual climb, a mixed terrain section leading to the summit of Mont Baron, and a varied route (through woodland and mountain pastures).
We opted to start from the church in Chevenoz, which doesn’t make much difference to the overall distance.
I recommend doing the circular route in the opposite direction to avoid the heat on the return journey along the stony path above Taverole (south-facing and beneath the rocky outcrops).
As we visit the area regularly, we didn’t encounter the aggressive dog (or its owner!), but we did spot (and hear!) a daft motorcyclist on a motocross bike in the pastures of Grand Chesnay and on the path down from the Col des Boeufs... UNACCEPTABLE!

A lovely walk; the climb up Mont Baron is well worth the detour. However, BEWARE: there’s a sign at the start warning of ‘danger: dog may bite’. A bit sceptical, I picked up a stick before setting off. Everything was fine until I reached the Col des Boeufs; on the way down, the path passes close to a house. When I was 200 metres away, two dogs started barking; one was tied up, the other lunged at me. I kept it at bay with my stick and shouted at it just as loudly as it was shouting at me. After 10 minutes of playing with the stick, its owner deigned to make the effort to call his dog back. I tried to strike up a conversation to make him understand that it’s dangerous, especially if there are children around, but he didn’t deign to answer me. It’s shameful – he knows his dog is aggressive; if he’s not capable of training his beast, he should tie it up like the other one; so beware! Personally, I won’t be going there again...

A lovely walk, though a bit muddy at this time of year (the paths are rutted by hunters in 4x4s)..
It’s a shame not to take the short detour via the summit of Mont Baron (an extra 1½ hours) with a stunning 360° view.

We found a few shortcuts after the Taverole stream.
Thanks for this route.

It’s a shame not to climb Mont Baron, either via the rocks or via a slightly less risky route further east
