To reach Montignac from Sarlat, Les Eyzies or Thenon, take the A89 motorway. Head towards the town centre, park in one of the car parks and walk to the Tourist Office.
(S/E) From the Tourist Office car park, turn right, then right again onto Rue du Barry at the corner of the priory. Cross two junctions, the first of which leads to the start car park. You’ll reach a third junction, which marks the start of the circular route.
(1) Turn left towards La Béchade. Cross Avenue de Lascaux, continue straight ahead, then take the first left. Keep going straight ahead, negotiate the right-hand bend and continue until the road turns 90° to the right at the last house.
(2) Take a path on the left. Return to the tarmac road at its end and continue in the same direction until you reach the junction with the Chemin de la Madeleine.
(3) Turn right towards the hamlet, climb the steep path which rejoins the tarmac road at Les Compousines.
(4) Turn right, then left towards La Balutie.
(5) At the houses, turn left onto a path that winds its way down until it joins a limestone track. Follow it to the left until you reach the first hairpin bend.
(6) Take the gently descending path on the right to pass the Reynauds spring and its wash house. Keep to the left until you reach a limestone track.
(7) Pass the hamlet of Les Fontas on your right. Join a tarmac road; follow it to the right for about 500 metres until you reach the first crossroads.
(8) Take the track on the right; after the houses, turn left and head into the woods until you reach a limestone track, which you should take on the right until you reach a Y-junction.
(9) Keep to the left and follow the track. Cross the Route de la Chapelle and continue straight ahead along the Chemin des Crêtes until you reach the first track leading down to the right.
(10) Turn right. At the bottom, continue to the right. The path climbs again until you reach a crossroads next to a farm shed in the hamlet of Les Quatre Chemins.
(11) Follow the tarmac road to the left as it passes through the hamlet, then turn right towards Le Truffet. Follow the Route de Fongouge to the left, leaving Le Truffet on your left, and continue to the first houses.
(12) Turn left towards the hamlet of Brénac. Follow the road to the right, then turn right at the church. Turn right again onto the Route de Brénac, then carry on straight ahead until you reach the junction with the Grande Guyonie.
(13) Turn left onto a grassy path, which then becomes tarmac, leading to the other side of the valley. Continue to the next junction with the Chemin du Masnègre.
(14) Keep left towards the hamlet of the same name. Pass between the walls and head down to the road.
(15) Turn right onto the road and carry on straight ahead until you reach the junction from the outward journey.
(1) Turn left to reach the centre of Montignac. Then turn left to reach the car park (S/E).
