Parking in the centre of the village.
(S) Start from the centre of the village of Billière and take the road towards the cemetery, leaving it on your right.
Continue down the road, passing through the hamlets of Les Combes and Le Vivier; note the bread oven as you go. You will come to an intersection.
(1) At the intersection (343 on IGN), turn left and continue downhill.
(2) After a left turn, use an old open barn as a landmark, pass it and the path descends below the road. You will reach a crossroads.
::3 Turn right to join a road just before point 238.
(4) Take a path markedGR® (white and red) on the right after the wall. 500m later, in the hamlet of Grand Lagneux, admire a small chapel by the side of the road.
Continue towards Petit Lagneux and, after passing through the village, you will come to the D921
(5) Follow the road north for 250m.
This is part of the Way of St James
(6). Turn right onto the path that enters a small wood.
It climbs steeply through a series of hairpin bends, but you will soon come out onto a ridge overlooking the Rhône. Pass a cross and the Saint Romain chapel will soon appear.
Panoramic view and information panels on the history of the chapel.
From the chapel, continue along the St Jacques path towards the village of Jongieux le Haut, with vineyards on either side of the path. The path will lead to the D210a at a place called Le Noyer (signposted).
(7) Take the road down towards the village and leave the St Jacques path as soon as you reach the first houses.
(8) Turn right onto a path that climbs towards the cross at Les Fourches. On the plateau, keep heading south-east, which will take you gently back to Billième (E).
On 23 August, we set off on a hike around the Gonzieu lakes. After 200 metres, in front of the old wash house, we saw a municipal notice prohibiting all hiking in the Gonzieu area (mountain biking, walking, motorbikes and access to the lake by car) until further notice from the town hall due to a high risk of fire caused by drought. We set off on another circular hike from Billière via ST Romain, which was uninteresting except for the small chapel; the rest was too tarred
So keep your eyes peeled and, to help you, it's 20 metres before a garden hedge. There's a small sign hanging on a tree.
