To get to know your town better, here is a short walking route that will take you past the monuments marking all the places of remembrance in Vitry-le-François. This route, which winds through the town’s streets, presents no particular difficulty.

This short walk takes you through the Blacy vineyards that produce Vitry-style Champagnes. There is a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding countryside from the telecoms radar site.

A walk through the Dervois bocage takes you from one observatory to another, where you can observe many species of water birds.

Starting from the Musée du Der in Sainte-Marie-du-Lac-Nuisement, a lovely walk past an old mill, then through a village in the Champagne region, and back via the Lac du Der embankment. Yellow and blue markings on part of the route.

Walk starting from Giffaumont harbour, then following the southern basin and its birds, returning via the village in bloom (in season) and the Grand Der sea wall. Yellow/black and yellow/blue signposting.

From the port of Giffaumont, follow the lake shore through the forest, looping around the Étang Chevalier and the Queue du Der, then return via Braucourt Beach and the south basin dyke.

A lovely, varied walk that follows an old railway line and farm tracks through flat countryside and forest, passing through two small villages. Depending on the season, you may be lucky enough to find wild walnuts along the old railway line.

A walk through Montier-en-Der allowing you to discover the Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre, a listed historic monument, and further on the former national stud farm, currently being redeveloped. Finish with a visit to the town centre and its gardens, and the little river Voire.

The eighteenth stage of the Jura to Hauts-de-France route via the Francigena. During this stage, the route invites you to stop off at Rosnay-l’Hôpital, where the church features – exceptionally – a crypt. A little further on, the route allows you to admire two of the finest half-timbered churches. Whilst half-timbered architecture is common, its use in religious architecture remains unusual. Along the way, you’ll discover the church at Bailly-le-Franc, one of the most charming due to its size and the variety of its decorations, followed by the church at Outines, the most monumental and largest of all the half-timbered sanctuaries in Champagne. The stage ends near Lake Der, surrounded by lush countryside; this lake features quiet areas reserved for the 300 species of birds recorded to date. It’s an opportunity to join the photographers hidden away in the birdwatching hides as they keep an eye on the birds.
