Arcis-le-Ponsart walks

A walk through the meadows and woods from Notre-Dame-d'Igny Abbey to the pretty village of Coulonges-Cohan with its wash houses and fountains.

Between land and water. Nestled in a valley, the Courville ponds are a unique wetland area in the Tardenois natural region, which is dominated by woods, vineyards and large-scale farming.

A very varied walk, the main highlight of which is the Hottée du Diable sandstone boulder field (a mini Fontainebleau). The rest of the walk alternates between forests, meadows and farmland, crosses several streams, and takes in a fine variety of churches and chapels. There are also numerous remains of cave dwellings and the ruins of an abbey at Val Chrétien. This is also the home of Camille and Paul Claudel, whose house can be visited during the season and on opening days.

This is a lovely walk in a little-known area, the Ardre Valley. The walk takes you over hills and through valleys, across Champagne vineyards, fields and forests. It starts at the beautiful Saint-Lié Chapel in Ville-Dommange.

A varied route, mapped out by the Marne Tourist Board, takes you through a forest, sand pits, vineyards, fields and two villages. From a balcony offering views of the Vesle valley, you will pass the forts of Saint-Thierry and Chenay. These were built after the 1870 war to protect Reims. This is a lovely walk through very varied terrain: vineyards, plenty of woodland, and the banks of the Marne towards the end of the route. You can visit Dormans, its castle and the Marne Battles Memorial.

Twenty-fourth stage of the Jura to Hauts-de-France via the Francigena. For this stage, you leave Champagne by crossing the Saint-Thierry massif. Once you reach Cormicy, the terrain becomes a little flatter. You pass through Berry-au-Bac. This is where the Berry-au-Bac National Necropolis is located, which contains 3,972 bodies, 2,014 of which are in individual graves and 1,958 in ossuaries. You then continue on to Corbeny, where you can see the Oratory of Saint-Marcoul. Then you follow the "Chemin des Dames", a major site of remembrance of the Great War, to arrive in the village of Bouconville-Vauclair, where you will find the Abbey of Vauclair, the Château de la Bôve and a network of trenches from the 1914-18 war.

Set off to discover the farms and châteaux of the Hermonville plateau on this circuit that will take you through the Saint-Joseph farm, the Luthernay farm, the Château de Vaux-Varennes and the Château de Châlons le Vergeur, along paths and through forests.

This circular mainly follows paths through the Hermonville communal forest. In the first part, you will walk alongside a limestone outcrop from which the stones used to build historic monuments were extracted, then enjoy the deciduous woods at the bottom of Les Marcelaines, before coming out through the vineyards with a lovely view of Marzilly Castle.

This short hike in the woods will be of interest to First World War enthusiasts as it passes by the memorial stone honouring the soldiers ofthe 35th Infantry Regiment who fell between 17 July and 3 August 1918 in the Bois de Courton. Please respect the area, as the woods are probably private property. Avoid during hunting season.

It passes through many woods, vineyards and pastures. It has little elevation gain and presents no difficulties, except for muddy conditions in wet weather. You will find it very peaceful. Then, history reveals itself. You will come across the Saint-Rigobert Chapel, a thousand-year-old place of worship that served as an observation and rescue post for General Mangin during the relentless Great War. Finally, the route takes you to the Berry-au-Bac National Necropolis, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made on the nearby Chemin des Dames.

This is a lovely, easy walk that takes you around the woods of Épernay, which are private and closed to walkers.This circuit passes through the Champagne vineyards and woods, offering magnificent views of the Marne and Cubry valleys.
