Description of the walk

Marked ‘A’

Park at Place de la Jaunière in the centre of the village, near the tennis court.

(S/E) Leave the square by taking the bridge over the Orillon, then continue straight on along Rue du Pont Supply. At the junction, turn left, then head up to the right along Rue de l’Épinette. Follow the path that runs alongside the fields, remembering to look back from time to time to admire the beautiful view of the village, dominated by the ruins of Rognac Castle.

(1) At the junction, turn left towards the hamlet of Villome. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the right and walk straight through the hamlet.

(2) Take the path on the left just after the water tower.

(3) At the next junction, continue to the left until you reach the D2. Cross carefully and continue along the path opposite, which leads into the hamlet of Chamery.

(4) At the fountain and the small wash house, follow the road down to the left. At the bend, take the path that climbs straight ahead between the pastures.

(5) At the edge of the large wood, take the path on the left which runs alongside another, much smaller wood. The path leads out into a clearing where you’ll find the memorial marking the spot where the young Quentin Roosevelt, son of the President of the United States, was shot down in his Nieuport 28 during an aerial battle on 14 July 1918.

Continue straight on along the path which leads back down towards the village of Coulonges. On the right stands the hollow trunk of the Grand Pièce poplar, a tree over a century old, which has been struck by lightning three times and whose trunk is so large that you can walk inside it. In its heyday, this tree represented Picardy in the 2015 Tree of the Year competition.

(6) At the bottom of the path, cross the D2 with care, then head towards the village centre via Rue du Poinçon and then Rue des Graviers, admiring the large washhouse with its metal framework as you pass. Turn right onto Rue de la Ferronnerie and enjoy the view of the church.

(7) At the junction (with the church opposite on the right), turn left. Walk past the Quentin Roosevelt School and head towards Place de la Jaunière (S/E).

Worth a visit

Along the route, there are several beautiful views looking down over the village.
The route passes by the memorial marking the spot where Quentin Roosevelt’s Nieuport 28 was shot down during an aerial battle on 14 July 1918. Since 2026, a museum at the local post office on Rue de la Saboterie has been dedicated to Quentin Roosevelt, his family and his story. The museum is usually open at the same times as the post office: on mornings from Monday to Saturday, from 9.45 am to 11.45 am, and on the third Sunday of the month from 3 pm to 5 pm
There are numerous wash houses and a listed church in the village.

The ‘L’Auberge de la Roue Fleurie’ bar and restaurant is in the village.

A stroll through the village starting from the Place de la Jaunière allows you to discover its history via a series of information panels. Brochures are available free of charge on site.

Hello,

I’ve added a few photos of this village, which I really like. As a result, the old willow tree (which is very beautiful, but doesn’t really represent the route) has ended up as the main photo.
The author of the walk can choose which photo is used to illustrate the route.

It really is a place worth exploring. And the restaurant is very nice, especially in summer, with its lovely terrace. It’s worth combining a visit with a trip to Igny Abbey, which isn’t far away.
