Loop from Fismes to Saint-Gilles

This loop runs through the Ardre valley, with the first part through woodland and the second part along field paths. The first part from Fismes to Saint-Gilles follows the old Reims Suburban Railway (CBR) line, which served many towns. The second part runs along the ridge of the road from Fismes to Fère-en-Tardenois, where, when conditions allow, many paragliders take flight.

Description of the walk

The starting point is in front of Fismes Town Hall. There are numerous parking spaces nearby, on Place de la Résistance or Place du Monument aux Morts.

(S/E) Take Rue René Letilly (D386) towards Epernay. Go straight across one crossroads and continue to the next.

(1) Turn right onto Chemin du CBR, then follow the GR®142 signs, marked in red and white. Join the road (D29).

(2) Turn right onto this road towards the village of Saint-Gilles.

(3) Turn right onto Grande Ruelle, be careful as this is a steep section (you can avoid this section by continuing along the road and taking the next alley on the right). At the top of this alley, follow Rue Cendras to the right.

(4) Keep right at the Y-junction and head towards Chezelles, crossing over the Ardre river.

(5) After the Chezelles community centre, turn right towards Fismes, following Rue Joseph Misiak.

(6) At the end of this street, turn left onto Rue des Chailleaux, towards the hospital, then right 100 metres further on, onto Rue Colbert Martin, and you will soon reach the car park (S/E).

On one of the sites of the ill-fated Chemin des Dames offensive of April 1917, this route is mainly through forest but with clear passages offering superb views that give an understanding of how perilous the operation was. The route through the site of the former village of Craonne, which was razed to the ground under a barrage of artillery fire, is particularly moving. The remains of Vauclair Abbey provide a beautiful heritage-filled end to the walk.
