Val d'Escreins from Guillestre

A pleasant trail nestled at the bottom of a gorge running alongside the Rif Bel leads to the heart of a valley. Until 1880, this trail was the only direct access between Guillestre and the hamlets of the Val d'Escreins, before the road from Vars was built.

Description of the walk

In Guillestre, follow the RD902 (Queyras road), cross the Rif Bel bridge and, before the last roundabout (gendarmerie), look for a road on the right (signposted "carrière de marbre"). Park on this road if possible.

(S/E) Follow this tarmac road which runs along the right bank of the Rif Bel stream. Continue to the marble quarry workshops.

(1) Stay on the road, passing the hamlet of Rif Bel. The road becomes a dirt track and you will soon reach the hamlet of Les Michelats.

(2) Continue along the edge of Rif Bel. Just before the path ends at the micro-power station's water intake, leave the path and take the trail on the left that goes uphill. Follow it to the Pont de Vars bridge.

(3) Do not cross the bridge, but continue along the edge of the stream. The path becomes a track leading to the Basse-Rua Refuge.

(4) Continue south-east, past the ruins of Escreins. Stay on this track, leaving the Pic d'Escreins trail on your left and, further on, the Font Sancte trails. Cross the Rif Bel via a footbridge (1781m) and continue straight on to the large car park at Escreins.

(5) Return via the same route or descend via the tarmac road to reach the Pont de Vars and take the return trail to the starting car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike with varied and pleasant terrain.
It climbs a little.
Lovely campsite at the Basse Rua refuge.
Then we continued on to the Vars ridges.
To be done.

A very pleasant walk with a cool breeze as it runs alongside a stream. However, the route is difficult for those with knee problems, and care should be taken to avoid slipping.

A very pleasant hike along a waterfall for a bit of coolness.
However, it is quite difficult as it is very steep in places, so caution is advised for people with knee problems

Apart from the first third of the route (up to point 2), which is on a rather unpleasant stony path, this is a very beautiful hike. The scenery is magnificent, and what a joy it is to encounter a group of horses (with bells, like cows 😉) roaming freely in the mountains!

It would be better to park the car after the marble works to avoid the tarmac.
Walk through the forest at the bottom of the valley. There are a few rough and rocky sections before you reach the Vars bridge.
Chant du Rif Bel throughout this superb hike.
Refuge closed.

Magnificent!
We will return to this valley!
Many hiking trails
You mustn't be afraid of heights! Some dizzying passages at the top of the ridges!
But what a view!!! It's a shame we can't fly!
To be done in this direction.
