Description of the walk

Departure from the hotel car park (paid parking).

(S) Head for the dam and walk along its top from north to south.

(1) Take a path that zigzags uphill (follow the "Dammahütte" signs with the red and white markings of the Swiss mountain trails). The path heads west-southwest and runs along the southern shore of the lake. Be careful on the small bridges that cross a few streams.

(2) At the Albert Heim Hütte junction, continue straight ahead (west). Cross the Damareuss on a metal bridge.

(3) At the end of the bridge, continue straight ahead and, at the fork that immediately appears, turn right. Climb up the switchbacks and then make a fairly long traverse from east to west to reach another fork.

(4) Take the path on the right that winds northwards. The climb is quite steep. A few tricky sections equipped with ropes allow you to cross a final barrier before reaching the refuge (E).

Notes

Spend the night at the Dammahütte, a small, friendly refuge with 20 beds at an altitude of 2,440 metres.

Like all high mountain hikes in Switzerland, the route is very well marked with red-white-red signs.
This route is for experienced hikers. Check the weather forecast beforehand as conditions can change quickly above the lake (fog rises quickly in the evening, but it is often very sunny in the morning).

After the small bridge, at the point (3), you can turn left and follow the "Panorama" route, which is a little longer. Personally, I find the "Panorama" route more scenic on the way down.
