Cycle from Beaucaire to Arles across the Beaucaire plain on the ViaRhôna (right bank of the Rhône), cross the Petit Rhône at Fourques, pass through the historic centre of Arles, then return to Beaucaire across the Tarascon plain on the left bank of the Rhône.

A circuit on the north slope of the Alpilles on good tracks nice, overlooking cross-shaded valleys and ridges that offer views on all sides of the Alpilles. The view goes far beyond this. The tour starts with a track which “keeps its cards close to its chest”. Apart from the return by the GR 6, you will meet few if any other people on this route that is far off the beaten track.

An easy hike on good paths that allows you to discover part of the Val d'Enfer (Rochers) before skirting the Rocher des Baux and passing through the olive groves to reach the Crêtes de Baumayrane with superb views of Les Baux and the Alpilles, the Crau, the Gulf of Fos and Mont Ventoux.

Climb up into the heath in search of the remains of a Gallo-Roman aqueduct. Visit the windmills of Fontvieille. Discover the ruins of the imposing Roman water mill at Barbegal and the aqueduct crossing the Vallon des Arcs.

Les Baux-de-Provence is a wonderful village dominated by the Alpilles mountain range, hidden in the middle of a landscape of rugged relief. This hike takes you deep into the Val d'Enfer, following the ridges along a wide forest path with panoramic views of the Alpilles, before returning to Les Baux-de-Provence for a tour of the neighbourhood. No difficulty except for the stairs to access the village.

A short circuit to discover a little-known fortified site above Les Baux-de-Provence with an unusual view of the village. The circuit starts with a path that takes you to a plateau above the quarries and ends with good tracks. It offers beautiful panoramic views of the south and east of the Alpilles.

A short hike around Baux-de-Provence, mostly on good trails. There is a short climb down a well-maintained rocky path. 360° views at the viewpoint (or what remains of it). The Baux cover "every angle" with many panoramic views. Return via the village with the option to pay it a visit.

Perched on its rocky outcrop, the village of Les Baux-de-Provence welcomes you like a life-size film set. Here, every cobbled street and every sculpted façade seems to whisper centuries of history. Stroll among the stone houses, Renaissance mansions, discreet chapels and ramparts overlooking the valleys. The view of the Alpilles is breathtaking.As you climb to the heights, the Château des Baux offers you a glimpse into medieval times: a fortress carved into the rock, war machines and breathtaking views of the heath. It reveals the village's warrior spirit.And to end the day on a high note, head to the Val d'Enfer, just below. There, the Carrières des Lumières await you for a unique, almost magical sensory experience that prolongs the emotion of the village in another register: that of living art.

Starting from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a beautiful walk along large, clearly-marked, shady trails. Beautiful viewpoints over the Alpilles, the village and the château des Baux-de-Provence. The fragrant plants of the South and also pines and even cedars.

Starting from the Barrage des Peirou, this hike takes you through the forest and along a ridge trail with panoramic views of the southern slopes of the Alpilles. You can start or end your walk by strolling along the lake.

Take a short walk around the Glanum site, climbing up the Gaudre de Valrugue and then descending the Vallon de Saint Clerg botanical trail.

From the Antiques de Glanum site, a beautiful climb up the Saint-Clerg valley, which serves as a botanical trail, takes you to the ridges and back down to Lake Peirou (Peirou, on the IGN map).

Pleasant walk in the Alpilles with magnificent panoramic views in places

The southern slope of the Caume Plateau is very suitable for winter hiking. This slope benefits from late sunshine and provides protection from the rather cold mistral wind after walking along part of the ridges coming from the Montagne des Deux Trous. (Please note) This route passes through the perimeter of the prefectural decree protecting the Caume biotope.

At the heart of the Alpilles Regional Nature Reserve, a small easy hike on good paths. The route takes you to the picturesque Rock with Two Holes painted by Van Gogh during his stay in Saint-Paul de Mausole from May 1889 to May 1890. It offers vast panoramic views over the two slopes of the Alpilles. To the south, in clear weather the view stretches to the Mediterranean, to the north over the Montagnette, the Gard, the Mont Ventoux, etc.

Discovering Arles and its numerous Roman monuments and buildings. You can enjoy a short picturesque break along the canal from Arles to Bouc where you can go right up to the famous Van Gogh bridge before returning to the no-less famous bull ring.

This walk follows ridge and forest paths, some marked and some unmarked, allowing you to discover the rich panoramas of the Alpilles.

A ridge walk starting off the beaten track, with views over the south of the Alpilles. A climb through an almost untouched valley to join the ridge trail, offering panoramic views of the north.

This circuit starts in a pine forest in shady valleys. The return journey is along a ridge trail with panoramic views of the village of Les Baux de Provence, the Alpilles and the adjacent valleys to the north and south. Warning: This hike has been modified from the one I originally described (due to a gate problem preventing access to part of the route). If you downloaded it before it was updated, please make sure you have the correct version.

This circuit requires attention and caution. You should not be prone to vertigo and should avoid wet weather and strong Mistral winds. If these conditions are met, you can use the fully renovated ladders and a few small secure ledges (handrails). A splendid panorama of the Alpilles, the Luberon, the Ventoux and the surrounding plains will reward you for your efforts.

Circuit in the Alpilles that alternates between pleasant tracks and wilder trails.

Arles, a city of art and history, is perfect for a short but intense urban stroll. This short route takes you through the must-see sites of the old town: from the ancient theatre to the Roman arena, passing through narrow streets bathed in Provençal light. An easy walk, ideal for strolling between heritage sites and Mediterranean atmosphere.

A beautiful hike that takes you to the drystone shelters, old huts built from dry stones in the heath. Beautiful landscapes and panoramic views of the Rhône.

Follow in the footsteps of the Roman aqueduct of Nîmes, between Sernhac and its tunnels and the Pont du Gard, passing through Saint-Bonnet-du-Gard and its fortified church.

Sernhac is located on the route of the Roman aqueduct, between the Pont du Gard and Nîmes. In the middle of the nearby heath, two tunnels dug into the limestone rock are the remains of this aqueduct. Continuing the walk, you will visit an old windmill. You will then climb Ferraud Hill, offering beautiful views of the lower Rhône Valley, the Alpilles, and more. Then, on Marduel Hill, overlooking Remoulin and the Gardon River at its end, the view extends all the way to Ventoux.

A foray into the heart of the wild Grand Combe, then the heath of the Gard. On this route, there are no breathtaking views or heritage sites, just nature in its simplest form.

At Sernhac, south of Remoulins and Saint Bonnet du Gard, there are two tunnels that flank a small nice valley. The Perrotte and Cantarelles tunnels. Head through them to discover the chimneys by which men lowered equipment and raised the rubble during excavation. One can see traces of blows of pickaxes and holes for oil lamps. Today it is a quite popular place to find some shade and cool off for the villagers.

Easy hike where you can discover the Pont du Gard and its environment.

One of the most beautiful hikes to discover the tunnel (where the water flowed from Uzès to Nîmes), the Pont du Gard, and the remains of the Roman aqueduct.

A very pretty hike with no major difficulties. You will discover the Pont du Gard, of course, but also numerous remains of aqueducts and several aqueduct bridges in varying states of repair. A short detour along the left bank of the Gard allows you to visit the Grotte de la Balauzière, located in the ruins of an old village. Finally, on the plateau on the left bank, you can explore the very interesting Arboretum. During the walk, you can admire thousand-year-old olive trees and an arboretum. And why not take a dip in the Gard?
