Description of the route

Depart from Beaucaire at the Cours Gambetta car park opposite the Port de Beaucaire footbridge.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, follow the canal on the right, Quai Charles de Gaulle. At the roundabout, turn left until you reach the bridge.

(1) Take the bridge over the canal and follow the road (D15) towards Arles. Pass under the railway bridge and you will reach a three-way junction just before a historic monument.

(2) Leave the D15 by turning right, look for a green sign indicating the cycle path towards Arles. This sign is repeated all along the road to Fourques. Continue on this road, Chemin de Beauvoir, pass under a road bridge and continue to the five-way junction with a calvary. After the greenhouses on the left.

(3) Take thesecond road on the left, still Chemin de Beauvoir.

(4) At the crossroads, first turn right then left and continue along Chemin de Beauvoir, following the same direction (south).

(5) At the crossroads with a car park on the left, first turn left then right and then again onto Chemin du Mas de Forton to continue along Chemin de la Cabanette. At the end of this road, turn left onto Chemin de Saujan, then right onto Chemin de Belleral at the next fork. Join a crossroad, first turn right then left and arrive at the large "Philippe Lamour" irrigation canal.

(6) Cross the bridge, then turn right immediately onto Chemin Saint-Paul. Continue southwards until you reach a fork in the road, then turn left and continue for about 50 metres.

(7) At the fork, take the road on the right that starts to the right of the electrical transformer. Go under the D15 road bridge and reach a fork at the end of the straight road.

(8) Turn right, then cross the bridge over the small canal and continue straight ahead to the main road (D15). Continue to the right, go straight ahead at the roundabout and you will reach a street at the corner of a car park, near the war memorial.

(9) Go around the car park on the left, then follow Rue des Arênes and continue towards Château de Fourques.

(10) Pass in front of Château de Fourques, then turn right and follow the Petit Rhône. At the roundabout, turn left and continue to the old bridge over the Petit Rhône.

(11) Cross the bridge and at the next roundabout, turn right onto Rue Marius Saulcy and join the cycle path on Rue Robert Martin.

(12) Turn left, cross Rue Gérald Rey and pass under the railway bridge slightly to the left. Continue along Chemin des Dragées. At Avenue du Docteur Morel, first turn right then left and follow Rue Bracke Desrousseaux. At Rue Gustave Eyglument, turn left and follow the middle street, Chemin Saint-Genest. At the stop sign, turn right and then take thefirst right, Rue Jean Mattieu Artaud (dead end). At the end, continue along the cycle path and go under the motorway bridge.

(13) Cross the Rhône and exit the bridge over the Rhône. Head back towards the city centre via Boulevard Georges Clemenceau, Boulevard des Lices and Avenue Victor Hugo.

(14) Once you reach the Luma Tower (and the Jardin des Ateliers), turn back onto the avenue until you reach the first intersection (traffic lights) and take the street that goes up slightly to the right, towards the Amphitheatre - Théâtre Antique, and enter the old town.

(15) At the top of the old town, take the street that turns left and runs alongside the Théâtre Antique. Continue to Place de l'Hôtel de Ville on the left side of the street.

(16) Walk past Sainte-Trophime Cathedral and its magnificent porch, then turn back slightly to find the street you left earlier at the corner of the Town Hall. Walk past the entrance to the Town Hall, then turn right at the next street and continue to Place du Forum.

(17) Cross Place du Forum, with the Grand Hôtel Nord-Pinus on your left and Café Van Gogh on your right. At the end of the square, turn right onto Rue des Arênes, then follow Rue de la Bastille to the right and, after a few metres, turn left onto Rue Diderot. You will arrive at the Roman Amphitheatre.

(18) Walk around the amphitheatre via the upper level. When you reach the lowest point, at the corner of the stairs, turn right onto Rue Voltaire.

(19) Just after Place Voltaire on your right, turn left onto Rue Léon Blum and head towards the banks of the Rhône.

(20) Turn right and walk along the banks of the Rhône. The road then runs for about 3 km alongside the SNCF railway area on your right and the commercial port of Arles on your left. Continue straight ahead on VC13, known as Chemin des Segonnaux, until you reach a four-way crossroads.

(21) Take the cycle path (marked by a green sign) that starts to the left of thefirst road on the right. Then follow the cycle path for about 10 km until you reach the paper mill.

(22) At the three-way junction, take the path on the left. Go under the railway bridge and then turn left onto Rue Barbès. At the end, turn left, go along Place Bremond and continue onto Quai du Rhône. You will reach a roundabout.

(23) Turn left and cross the bridge over the Rhône, connecting Tarascon to Beaucaire. Continue straight ahead and head for the Cours Gambetta car park (S/E).

An easy but very pleasant circular route through the countryside, with a stop in Arles on the way there for a bite to eat and a visit to the amphitheatre, before setting off again along a lovely cycle path

a pleasant journey through fields and vineyards
pleasant visit to Arles
however, the return journey along the cycle path, facing the mistral wind, along miles of straight track, ending at the chemical factory (and its smells), was completely uninteresting. A shame...
