Memorial to the Mirage crash and pond at the start of Froidefontaine

Park along La Croix, a listed site (calvary), in Froidefontaine.

(S/E) Head towards Les Combes, Rue du Calvaire, until you reach the D35.

(1) Cross with caution and continue straight ahead on the forest path. Join the crossroads of the GRP® Haute Joux-Mont Noir and the Champagnole region.

(2) Turn right, cross the D340 with caution. Continue and, following a bend to the left, you will reach a cross. Stay here on the GRP® on the left to join the D55. Follow it on your left until you see the sign for the Stèle Commémorative du 9 Janvier 2019.

(3) Leave the D55 and turn right onto the GRP® to reach the stele.

(4) Take the path on your right and you will quickly reach a four-way crossroads.

(5) Leave the GRP® here and take the path on the left, which descends slightly and leads to a road.

(6) Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead on a completely flat section to reach a new road.

(7) Follow it on the left and then, at the bend, take the path opposite. Keep on it, ignoring the paths on the right and left. Walk through the forest, then along the edge of fields, until you reach another road.

(8) Turn left onto it and continue for a few metres, then turn right, crossing with caution. You will reach a track at the edge of the La Seigne des Barbouillons Nature Reserve.

(9) Turn left to follow the nature reserve, continue until you reach the Mignovillard cemetery.

(10) Turn right, follow the nature reserve again and you will come out onto the D107.

(11) Follow it along the parallel track until you reach a bridge over a stream.

(12) Cross the road with caution and take the path on the left to reach the Étang de Fontaine Carrée.

(13) Follow the pond, then turn left towards Censeau. Join the GRP®.

(14) Turn left and cross the D107 again, taking care. You will reach a wayside shrine. Leave the GRP® here and continue straight ahead to the hamlet of Petit Villard.

(15) Turn left onto Rue du Puits. You will soon reach a farm, where you should turn right. Continue along this wide path, then keep left at the T-junction to reach a short descent leading to the road serving the Moulin du Martinet.

(16) Turn right to reach the Moulin du Martinet.

(17) Be careful here: there is a Private Property sign on a path leading to the pond on the left. Do not go there. Go around the pond and continue along this small road to reach the car park at Froidefontaine cemetery (S/E).

(13) Break at the Étang Fontaine Carrée, just a bench.
Hike completed in 3 hours and 40 minutes.

(4) Memorial to the 9 January 2019 tragedy: Commander Baptiste Chirié, 30, and Captain Audrey Michelon, 29, were killed when their Mirage 2000-D crashed during a low-altitude training mission in difficult weather conditions.
