The Bardou and Héric Circuit

From Mons to Douch via Héric

This is the first day of the Haut Languedoc trip. It will take at least 5 hours to reach Douch. The climb to the Col de la Maure is unmarked but follows a well-marked, safe path. See § Practical information (¹).The access to the Col du Bardou is beautiful. The descent to the Ruisseau d'Héric and the climb back up to Douch via the hamlet of Héric are very varied.
The Caroux plateau via the Refuge de Font Salesse and the Gorges d'Héric

This 14 km loop takes you past the main points of interest in the area: the Gorges d'Héric, the Refuge de Font Salesse, the Caroux plateau and its orientation table, and the very charming village of Héric.
The Tour du Pin - Vieussan

This hike takes you to the top of the Tour du Pin from Vieussan, a picturesque village with many stone buildings, built in the meanders of the Orb. Discover this commune, which offers interesting historical remains and a walk that changes slopes regularly, allowing you to enjoy splendid views, including a 360° panoramic view from the summit of the Tour du Pin at 666 metres.
From Gaillergues to Saint-Vincent-d'Olargues
Starting from the Passa Païs greenway in Gaillergues, the circuit follows tracks and paths climbing gently to the Church of the Commanderie des Chevaliers de St-Jean-de-Jérusalem. It offers ever-changing views of the Jaur valley and the peaks: Caroux-Espinouse, Col de Fontfroide, Somail, Avant-monts
The Col de l'Ourtigas

In a varied landscape of rocks, broom, old farms and ruined hamlets. A discovery on the plateau: mouflon traps (not for hunting, but for monitoring populations).
Vialaïs circuit from Douch

This is the second day of the Haut Languedoc trip.Loop hike around the Montagne d'Aret.Depending on how much time you have, the hike can be shortened from (1) directly to (4).
Updated by the author on 10 June 2025, as the OFB reports that after (6) it is a Caroux-Espinouse hunting and wildlife reserve. Unauthorised entry is a 4th class offence punishable by a €135 fine. The route and description have therefore been modified.
360° tour of the Rocs Caroux and La Siejo via the Aiguilles and Les Vires

Access from the village of Douch to the plateau and Roc du Caroux, then a semi-climbing route along ledges to go around the peaks and enjoy a 360° view of the Héric Gorges below. Return via the plateau to the village.
⚠️ Poor mobile phone reception in the rocks of the peaks. The circuit is challenging, so make sure you tell your friends and family about your plans.
Around the Caroux plateau

Walk on the Caroux plateau, which offers magnificent views of the Orb valley, the Mediterranean coast and the Pyrenees.
Loop from Saint-Étienne d'Albagnan via Notre-Dame-de-Trédos and Prémian
The highlights of this hike are a visit to the Notre-Dame-de-Trédos chapel, the stone bridges at St-Étienne d'Albagnan and Prémian, and a few kilometres along the Passa Païs greenway between Bédarieux and Mazamet.This is the first Visorando hike linking Saint-Étienne d'Albagnan or Prémian to Notre-Dame-de-Trédos. This hike can be started from either Prémian or St-Étienne d'Albagnan.There is also a well-known and slightly more difficult loop starting from Riols towards Notre-Dame-de-Trédos.
The Colombières Gorges

An exceptional circular walk above the torrent of Arles where you can discover a cave dwelling and a superb Cervennes collection in the hamlet of Fage.
Loop starting from Le Pin

This hike offers beautiful views of the foothills of the Massif Central and the plain to the south, with the Orb valley winding at the foot of the slope, and to the north, facing the Carroux massif and the Gorges d'Héric.
The Orb Gorges from Ceps

This beautiful route climbs up the fabulous Orb Gorges to the village of Vieussan and then heads back into the thick scrubland that covers the western slope of the Ayrolle summit.

The Chemin des Légendes and its thousand steps

Above Riols, this trail takes you by the hand through the Somail mountains, explaining, marker after marker, schist and gneiss, menhirs and dolmens, and of course the legend of the Saut de Vézoles. A tough climb but well worth it. A magnificent hike.

In a forest setting, peat bogs with remarkable wildlife punctuate this walk around Lake Vezoles.
The Jaur Valley and Notre-Dame-de-Trédos
This circuit overlooks the Jaur valley and offers breathtaking views of the Somail massif and the Saut de Vezoles, before revealing the fabulous Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Trédos.
Short loop around Mont Marcou

This hike forms a loop with a 360° view at the highest point, offering a magnificent panorama of the sea, the Carroux plateau and all the mountains to the north and east of this remarkable dome: Mont Marcou. The climb is quite demanding with steep slopes where you sometimes have to use your hands to climb rocky passages. The descent also has some fairly steep sections. This hike may therefore be difficult for some. However, the first 45 minutes allow you to warm up before tackling the tough climb to the antennas. A beautiful route.
The Orb and Bitoulet Valley
A pleasant walk that climbs slightly at the start of this circuit through oak trees, ending at the small Notre Dame de Capimont sanctuary, a true haven of peace and freshness. Overlooking the Orb and Bitoulet valleys, where you will be in the shade during hot weather, a panoramic view awaits you.
Loop of the ridges in Pardailhan
Hike on the ridges of Pardailhan at an altitude of around 800m. Loop through pine and chestnut forests with superb views on clear stretches. There are several places on the way where you can stop for a picnic.
The eucalyptus forest

Starting from Lugné, a hamlet in the commune of Cessenon-sur-Orb, this hike will immerse you in the Mediterranean heath and the Côteaux de Cessenon. Some unusual encounters during this hike: Statue of Liberty, Eucalyptus...
Prades-sur-Vernazobre loop via the Col du Lac
Starting from Prades-sur-Vernazobre, this loop passes through the Col du Lac, approaching Berlou and Col de la Maurerie. This is an easy hike with no particular difficulties. There is some shade, but most of the route is on unshaded forest tracks. You will walk through vineyards offering beautiful views, particularly of the Caroux.
Saint-Michel de Mourcairol Pic de La Coquillade

Magnificent views that have to be earned.
Trail through the Saint-Michel National Forest: oak forest with mixed species, along small paths that are quite steep in places.
The Tsaquarello thermal springs and the Payrac trail

Walk along the trail and discover reconstructed stone markers: cairns, drystone shelters and more. You will have a magnificent view of the Monts de Lacaune. From May to September, you can linger at the Maison de Payrac, a 19th-century farmhouse that has been restored in keeping with the lifestyle and objects of yesteryear.

Sometimes calm, sometimes tumultuous, discover the Orb on this walk. Many international canoe/kayak competitions take place in the Réals basin. A basin with a reputation for being highly technical.
