Montahut via the Griffoulas ridge

A superb, varied hike through forest, heather fields and rocky summits to enjoy the exceptional views offered by Montahut. Please note, however, thatthe Griffoulas ridge is technically challenging to traverse as you will often need to use your hands to cross the rocky outcrops: no equipment is required, however. This hike is therefore aimed at experienced hikers who know how to navigate using cairns or read a GPS track to follow a path that is sometimes barely visible. Visorando app recommended

Description of the walk

The hike starts from the Fabrègue Haute car park. To get there, take the D908 (road from Bédarieux to Saint-Pons de Thomières) towards Olargues. Coming from Bédarieux, at Olargues, 400 m after the Eiffel Bridge, take the road on the right towards Auziale (D14E). Coming from Saint-Pons, at Olargues, continue on the D908 until the second entrance to the village. Leave it on your right and take the first road on the left about 50 metres further on, towards Auziale (D14E). Follow the D908 for approximately 1.7 km, until you reach the Fabrègue Haute junction. Then follow the road to the right; the car park is in the bend at the end of the cul-de-sac.

(S/E) Return to the access road until you reach the D14E. At the crossroads, turn right and follow the departmental road for about 100 m.

(1) Take the path on the left to reach the hamlet of Le Cros. Continue to the path that climbs to the right.

(2) Follow this path for a few dozen metres, then take the path climbing to the left and continue to the access road to the drystone shelter.

(3) Turn right and ignore the access to the house by taking the hairpin bend. The road becomes a track. Continue along this, negotiate the hairpin bend to the right and proceed for about 400 m to reach a cairn on the left.

(4) Turn left onto the path marked by cairns and follow it to the Col du Griffoulas.

(5) Follow the path which climbs northwards. This path is marked with blue dots as far as the Col d’Ourliades. This section of the hike is technical and is suitable for experienced hikers in good physical condition.

(6) Turn left, then quickly turn right onto the track heading north-east. At the next junction, take the sharp left turn to reach the Col du Montahut.

(7) To the right, in the forest, there is a low stone wall. This is the start of the path leading up to Montahut. Follow the GPS track closely as this path is sometimes poorly marked on the ground. Make your way to the summit of Montahut.

(8) Head back down the path that heads west and then turns left. Once you reach theGR®, turn right and continue to the first path junction.

(9) Turn left to follow this path down to near the Col d'Ourliades. At the junction, take the path heading left (east) and follow it through a series of hairpin bends until you reach a track at a large concrete slab.

(10) Take the track to the left, heading south-east, to the hamlet of Auziale.

(11) Follow the concrete path down to the right, marked in yellow (PR®). Turn right again onto the road in the hamlet, keeping to thePR® markings. At the large bend, ignore the track heading straight ahead and stay on the concrete road. Continue to follow the yellow markings until they cross the D14E.

(12) Cross the road and take the paved slanting street leading down (PR®) for about 350 m to reach a crossroads marked by a cairn.

(13) Take the path on the right, leaving thePR®, and follow it to Fabrègue Haute. Cross the hamlet and follow the short stretch of road leading to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The path (4) to the Col du Griffoulas is marked by cairns.

From the Col du Griffoulas (5) to the Col d'Ourliades (6), the hike is technical and frequently requires using your hands to negotiate rocky outcrops. Follow the blue markers carefully. This section should not be attempted when it is raining or when the rocks are wet or frozen. Do not attempt it in strong winds either, as there is a risk of falling. When conditions are favourable, no special equipment is required. A good level of fitness is essential.

Between the Col du Montahut (7) and the summit (8), the track is not always visible. You must be able to read a GPX track using Visorando or a GPS.

A superb hike, for experienced walkers. Although the path is sometimes poorly marked (points 4 and 7), it’s fairly easy to find your way with a GPS. Between points 4 and 5, follow the ridge, the cairns and the low wall. And at point 7, simply head upwards to the summit. Don’t be put off by the technical section after point 5; it looks daunting for the first few metres, but this initial section is actually the most difficult part. Like the author, I would advise against attempting this route if the rock is wet, frozen or in strong winds. Finally, in May 2026, particularly between points 2 and 3, a few fallen trees slow progress.
Thank you!

I forgot another point:
To reach the summit, starting from point 7, I found the low wall, but no trail... Perhaps it was hidden under the thick layer of leaves...
So I started walking along the low wall on the right-hand side, then on the left-hand side when it almost disappeared, and there I found a path leading to the summit.
In any case, you can navigate by sight, as the forest is not dense and the terrain is not difficult.

Very interesting route. The section between points 5 & 6 is magnificent, generally well marked with cairns and blue markers. If in doubt, don't hesitate to backtrack a few steps; you'll always find a marker/cairn eventually.
I can confirm that it is difficult to find the path at point 4... the start of the trail is very poorly marked and a little overgrown. It gets better after a few hundred metres. Thank you for the GPX track!

Physical hike up the Griffoulas ridge and the Roc d'Ourliades. Delicate slab crossing at the start of the ridge. The blue dots are a valuable aid.
At point 4, the path is difficult to find due to vegetation, and there are no cairns. Follow the trail, which is accurate. Then take the narrow path, which is regularly marked with cairns, to the Col de Griffoulas.
The suggested access to Montahut is difficult to spot; I followed the path to the left of the small wall.
Be careful when descending from Auziale to reach the car park. At point 13, leave the yellow markings and head right
The hike can be extended with a short loop to the Bourdils refuge.

A magnificent 5½-hour route with two 23-year-olds – a physically demanding route even for experienced hikers, particularly the fairly long climb up the Griffoulas ridge and the Roc d'Ourliades. The blue markers and cairns are a great help in keeping your way, as it’s not easy to follow a GPS whilst climbing over rocks...The picnic at the summit of Montahut and its view is a real reward (the suggested detour for the final approach isn’t easy to find...)
Afterwards, the descent through the woods is very beautiful and relaxing, as is the dip (of the feet) in the stream. Be careful at the end not to miss the last cairn and the right-hand bend towards the La FABREGUE HAUTE car park. We didn’t spot it and had to trudge along an old, overgrown path and through a field to reach it...

A few equally interesting alternatives:
- from the track where the path descending from the Col des Ourliades joins, a shortcut leads directly to Le Cros; it is a bit overgrown at the moment, but you can’t get lost: head straight down to the stream on the right from the concrete section;
- you can reach the start of the Griffoulas climb from the other side of the ridge, either setting off from Mauroul or from the chapel of St-Martin aux œufs.
Otherwise, you won’t come across many people on this technical trail; the view is magnificent and well worth the effort. Take care at the bottom of the Griffoulas trail if it’s damp, as a section over flagstones is quite slippery (though this can be avoided by veering slightly off the path).
Another hike for lovers of nature, rocky terrain and the solitude of the great outdoors...
