Description of the walk

Park in the small hamlet of Saint-Martin-de-L’Arçon in the car park opposite the church.

(S/E) Walk uphill for about 50 m and take the road on the right for about 200 m until you reach the hairpin bend before the water tower.

(1) Take the blue-marked trail which passes over the water tower. An old but well-marked path will take you directly to the Cascade de l’Albine via the Col de Pomarède.

(2) To continue, cross the waterfall (take care if the flow is strong) and look for the blue markings. Carry on along the path, which climbs steadily, and after 10 to 15 minutes, you’ll need to cross another waterfall, this time on the left (you haven’t gone astray).

(3) At eye level directly in front of you, the blue markings show you the path. Follow this path to the summit, where a magnificent view awaits you on the right.

(4) Follow the track for about 1 km before you come to a wooden footbridge.

(5) Turn right and continue for about 500 m until you reach a path on the left that branches off at a right angle.

(6) Turn left onto the path and join a main track.

(7) Turn right and begin the descent to Douch. Make the most of the water source and a lovely stone table for lunch.

(8) From this stone table, take the path on the left, marked with yellow signposts, and climb for about 200 m, ignoring a fork to the left.

(9) At the three-way junction, keep to the right and continue climbing for 200 m

(10) Turn onto the path on the right, climb to the summit and then descend to the Col de Tirondel.

(11) At the pass, carry on straight ahead.

(12) Ignore the path opposite and take the mountain bike track on the left.

(13) Carry on to the right towards the Col du Salis.

(14) At the pass, turn left towards Héric (3 km – 40–45 minutes).

(15) In Héric, continue to the right towards Bardou. Head for the pass of the same name.

(16) At the top of the hill, at the junction for Saint-Martin-du-Froid, Mons and Bardou, head towards Bardou. Cross the hamlet, keeping level, then follow the path as it continues. The climb becomes steep and almost vertical. Keep a large pine tree at the summit in your sights and head towards it. Behind it lies the Saint-Martin-du-Froid chapel.

(17) Follow the track and begin the descent to the Col de Bardou.

(16) Head towards Mons, keeping to the left at all junctions.

(18) Once in Mons, follow the tarmac road to the left, then quickly take the mountain bike track to the right and follow it. Do not enter the village; pass the car park and continue uphill for 100 m.

(19) Continue climbing along the valley floor.

(20) Go down the small flight of steps on the right, cross the Passerelle des Soupirs and turn right. Cross La Coste via Rue du Roc de l’Homme, then continue straight on. Follow the track to Saint-Martin-de-L’Arçon (S/E).

This route cannot be followed as described. Access to a 320-hectare area, including the Saint-Martin chapel, is prohibited: https://inpn.mnhn.fr/espace/protege/FR38...
Please stay on the GRP path; this will prevent walkers from trampling through a whole section that is off-limits whilst searching for the route described.

A two-day hike with one overnight camp.
Suitable for fit walkers (who train intensively on a regular basis); don’t pretend to be fit if you aren’t – it’s no big deal.
The start of the hike is quite challenging and very steep in places (I had to help the dog get through!), so you’ll need to be experienced at navigating. A GPS is essential for following the route and adapting as you go.
All the water sources were almost dry, so make sure you bring your own water and carry it with you!
The arrival on the plateau is well worth stopping at and setting up camp, as the view is breathtaking!
The rest of the route goes smoothly, but watch out for water shortages along the way.
A hike with some truly stunning views.
I can confirm that this hike is physically demanding, so make sure you know your limits.
For those who love walking, exploring, adventure, camping and working up a sweat, it’s brilliant!

A lovely walk offering beautiful views and a bit of a challenge as there’s a lot of climbing. Be sure, however, to follow the GPS track carefully, as the paths between points 3 and 4 and on the descent from the Chapelle Saint-Martin du Froid aren’t always signposted and can sometimes be a bit tricky to find amongst the vegetation. We spent the night in Douch to split the hike into two stages (8.5 km on Saturday and 19 km on Sunday).
The advantage is that this walk is generally quiet, apart from a few sections of the GRP, so you’ll be on your own amidst breathtaking scenery. What’s more, it’s not uncommon to spot mouflons, which are accompanied by their young at this time of year.
If you’re planning an overnight stop in Douch, try to start the walk in Mons rather than Saint-Martin de l’Arçon, to spread the effort more evenly over two days, with the not inconsiderable bonus of being able to finish the walk with a swim on arrival at the Gorges d’Héric.

Hike undertaken from 11 July 2022 at 15:40 to 13 July 2022 at 13:00, involving two overnight stops.
This description is probably enough for anyone who has the GPX track… which I didn’t have, as my phone was dead…
And two tricky bits: one after the first waterfall, and, more importantly, one after Bardou on the climb up to Saint-Martin du Froid.
But a magnificent route, with superb scenery and views. Saw some chamois and mouflons.

A lovely walk! Very varied, with beautiful views and a magnificent waterfall. We did it over two days, setting off from Douch and spending the night in Mons. It’s a challenging route – especially the climb from Mons to Douch on the second day – but it’s perfectly doable over two days. Thank you for this route.
