Roqueredonde walks

This hike starts in Roqueredonde and takes you to the Orb river and the Tibetan Buddhist temple Lerab Ling, where you can take a short meditation break. The route then enters the Escandorgue National Forest, where the charm of the forest paths contrasts with the chaotic dolomitic landscape of the Causse. Finally, the route follows ancient paths worn by passing flocks of sheep.

A beautiful walk, without major difficulty and well marked, that takes you through scrubland and forests, cliffs and limestone plateaus.

In a limestone circus setting, this circuit climbs to the foot of the cliffs, offering views of the Lodève countryside. After a refreshing stop in the hamlet of Labeil and its converted cave, it continues on the plateau, enters a dark forest, then crosses the limestone plateau amid a chaotic rock formation.

A hike in a pleasant valley with plenty of water and the Pas de l'Escalette, a spot steeped in history. The return via the plateau offers a wide view of the surrounding area. In Soubès, follow the signs to the hikers' car park near the Impasse des Garennes retirement home. Then simply follow the yellow markings, passing through the botanical trail and then the old salt road, which leads to the foothills of the Larzac. This walk offers breathtaking views of the Cirque du Bout du Monde before returning to our starting point via the Camin Farrat.

South of the Causse du Larzac, the trail runs along a ledge overlooking the hamlet of Gourgas. Halfway up the cirque, a trail enters the woods and rocks and crosses the beds of the small tributaries of the Brèze stream: the Aven, the Figaret and the Rieussec. Below, the valley opens up to reveal a variety of landscapes, including dark ravines and bright meadows watered by numerous springs. The trail reaches the Pioch Blanc and then returns to the hamlet via the Doumergarie bridge.

At the gateway to Lodève and Lake Salagou, on the Cayroux plateau, discover dolmens, drystone shelters and stone enclosures as you cross a landscape of "ruffes", an astonishing red earth.

In a remote and uncrowded area, you will pass through valleys and ridges in the heart of the Monts-d'Orb national forest, renowned for its plantations of Laricio pines native to Corsica.

A short but very pretty hike in the Octon hills, offering views of Lake Salagou at the start. The destination is the small Romanesque chapel of Notre-Dame de Roubignac (7), but there are other places of interest along the way, such as the dolmen and the ruins of Octon Castle, visible from the other side of the valley.

Starting from Larzac, crossing the Domaine de la Maison des Forestiers and visiting a prehistoric shelter, you will descend to the source of the Durzon, then climb back up through the Pas de la Mule forest.

A beautiful and very varied hike. The route includes three caves, including the "illuminated" cave, a sinkhole, a beautiful natural arch and the famous canals (or canoles).

This hike forms a loop with a 360° view at the highest point, offering a magnificent panorama of the sea, the Carroux plateau and all the mountains to the north and east of this remarkable dome: Mont Marcou. The climb is quite demanding with steep slopes where you sometimes have to use your hands to climb rocky passages. The descent also has some fairly steep sections. This hike may therefore be difficult for some. However, the first 45 minutes allow you to warm up before tackling the tough climb to the antennas. A beautiful route.

At the heart of the Languedocian hinterland, Lake Salagou is a perfect place for a hike and all sorts of sports activities in the fresh air.

Discover Lake Salagou from the plateau and its drystone shelters scattered among the vineyards. Herds of animals guarded by Patou dogs, between 2 and 5 in number. Avoid hiking with your dog! See practical information.

The artificial lake of Lac de Salagou has created an attraction that goes far beyond water sports and bathing. Geology, pastoralism, old villages, drystone shelters and vineyards complete the appeal of this region, which returns to peace and quiet at the end of summer.

This is a very interesting route, particularly around the Canalettes site. These are two canoles, faults carved into the limestone of the causses by erosion. These fractures are particularly deep at this point. This hike also reveals the source of the Durzon, which appears as a resurgence. Similarly, the steep passage of the Pas de la Mule, although short, is another special feature of this loop.

A beautiful hike on the Causse du Larzac to admire the Cirque du Brias, commonly known as the Cirque de Tournemire. It is surrounded by one of the most beautiful cliffs on the western edge of the Larzac, from the top of which you can enjoy a vast panorama. The best time to visit is May/June to admire all the flowers on the causse. Continue towards Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux with its magnificent restored hospital tower.

This trail in the Forêt Domaniale des Écrivains Combattants allows you to discover megalithic tombs.

Walk around Villeneuvette and its hydraulic remains, which were used to supply the now disused royal factory.

A pleasant and easy walk, except for its length. Balcony views over the Languedoc plain, Nébian, Clermont-l'Hérault, Villeneuvette and Lieuran-Cabrières.

Walk on the Caroux plateau, which offers magnificent views of the Orb valley, the Mediterranean coast and the Pyrenees.

Access from the village of Douch to the plateau and Roc du Caroux, then a semi-climbing route along ledges to go around the peaks and enjoy a 360° view of the Héric Gorges below. Return via the plateau to the village. ⚠️ Poor mobile phone reception in the rocks of the peaks. The circuit is challenging, so make sure you tell your friends and family about your plans.

This is the second day of the Haut Languedoc trip.Loop hike around the Montagne d'Aret.Depending on how much time you have, the hike can be shortened from (1) directly to (4). Updated by the author on 10 June 2025, as the OFB reports that after (6) it is a Caroux-Espinouse hunting and wildlife reserve. Unauthorised entry is a 4th class offence punishable by a €135 fine. The route and description have therefore been modified.
