If you’re not staying in Avène, there’s a large car park to the south of the village where you can park and start your walk.
In this description, the walk starts in front of the Tourist Office, Quai des Tanneries.
(S/E) From the Tourist Office, keep to the right and head towards the restaurant L’Avenette. Walk past the grocery shop and, immediately afterwards, go under the archway. Cross the green footbridge over the River Orb. Continue straight ahead and cross the car park to the left of the playground. You’ll reach the dirt track.
(1) The wide, stony track climbs steadily. It passes below La Salette, then winds its way loosely. Ignore all the turnings to the right. After one kilometre, the track reaches its first high point.
(2) It levels out briefly before starting another, gentler climb to a Y-junction with a grassy path on the right – the second high point.
Then a significant descent begins. After 200 m of descent, the dirt track gives way to concrete.
(3) After 100 metres, the dirt track returns. The path overlooks the rear of Beau Désert, then the BNB des Bains d’Avène holiday complex. Look out for a path branching off to the left at the bend in the track.
(4) This path descends to the edge of the D8, opposite the thermal baths park and near the restaurant Les Mûriers. Cross the road and follow the footpath that crosses the River Orb and leads to the foot of the entrance to the thermal baths, opposite the lift. Continue to the left, skirting the buildings, and keep to the path running parallel to the road until you reach the road leading up to Brès.
(5) Stay on this path, which climbs slightly before descending. Pass two rest areas with benches. You’ll rejoin the road in front of the La Remise residential complex. Cross the road again to take the footpath leading to the village.
Walk past the town hall/post office, then past the restaurant and the grocery shop to reach the tourist information office (S/E).
