The Jure Stream

From Ceilhes-et-Rocozels, in Haut-Languedoc, near the ‘border’ with Aveyron, here’s an opportunity to head for the hills, in the Monts d’Orb State Forest, towards the Rocher du Canari on the edge of the Tesserièyres Plateau. The Ruisseau de Jure will then serve as your guide back to the village, which lies on the banks of the Orb, a coastal river regulated by the Avène Reservoir.

Description of the walk

Ceilhes-et-Rocozels – Campsite car park, alongside the D 902

Markings: 1 blue stripe – Sentier du Canari

(S/E) From the car park, cross the road and follow the Chemin de Peyral, then the Rue de la Croix de la Mission; at the square, go straight on under the archway on Rue du Portalet and continue to the fountain. Take Rue des Fontaines.

(1) At the road, take the Chemin du Foirail opposite – the village’s former fairground, established in 1911. At the entrance to the cemetery, turn right downhill.

(2) At the crossroads just after this, head straight ahead, wading across or using the small bridge to cross the Ruisseau de Jure. Continue for over 600 m along the Chemin de Montpaon.

(3) At the fork in the road, continue climbing to the left for 80 m. Leave the track and take the small path on the right through the oak woodland; then, at the fork in the road, continue climbing to the left for over 500 m, until you reach another fork in the road. Turn left. You’ll come to a junction with a track 150 m further on.

Markings cease (the Canari path branches off to the right)

(4) Leave thePR® trail by continuing straight ahead. Carry on towards the Plateau de Tesserieyres. Turn left at the three-way junction and join a track.

(5) Turn left and climb a little further westwards. At the edge of a field, cross it, heading for a pylon supporting a high-voltage power line if the field is not under cultivation, or go round it on the left. Begin the descent and arrive at a junction of five paths.

(6) Take the left-hand track (west), then turn south, crossing the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Jure. At the junction, follow the track on the left, which takes a detour to go round a field. Head back south and reach a ‘roundabout’-style junction.

(7) Leave the path leading to Rocozels on your right and turn in the opposite direction. Head down to the right towards the Ruisseau de Jure. Cross it once more. Cross the Boundou plateau heading east and join a hard-packed track.

(8) Follow the Chemin des Candials to the right. Wind your way down to the Jure ravine. Follow the stream, keeping to the left bank. You’ll reach the houses at Les Gandials.

(9) Walk past them and cross the stream once more. You’ll reach the cemetery. Walk along its boundary wall until you reach the junction you passed on the way there.

(2) Head straight on and pass a covered wash house. Continue along Rue des Horts, which runs past several cultivated plots behind stone walls. (See the link in the ‘Places to see’ section for a more in-depth tour of the village). Turn right and head up Grand Rue until you reach Chemin du Foirail.

(1) Take Rue des Fontaines again to return to Rue du Portalet. Pass under the gate in the ramparts once more and head down Rue de la Croix de la Mission to reach Avenue du Lac. Walk along the right-hand side via the pedestrian path and return to the Plan d’eau du Bouloc car park, in front of the campsite entrance (S/E).

Be careful on the fairly steep, exposed climb in hot weather (as noted by the author last May). Drinking water (no restrictions) at the wash house (but it’s at the end of the route!)

Picnic tables around Lake du Bouloc
Le Bouloc Campsite: various types of accommodation and a small convenience shop. Snack bar open in season (a range of affordable meals)

Smartwatch data: 415 m elevation gain

Worth a visit

In Ceilhes, do take the time to wander through the village’s medieval alleyways and soak up the tranquillity of the surroundings. A charming maze of streets, a magnificent church, beautiful doorways and a refreshing fountain

A beautiful hike that is quite steep at the start. It is best to set off early to avoid the heat in summer. The climb is exposed, then there is vegetation with lots of colourful butterflies and views of the surrounding mountains. Ceilhes is a very pleasant place to visit, with "shared" gardens for the residents. There is a lovely lake with benches and children's games near the campsite.

A lovely walk – not too difficult, but with a steep climb at the start

The flora is magnificent thanks to the recent rain; Lacaune sheep grazing in the pastures, and a visit to Roquezels is a must – a very pretty hamlet

Prepare yourself mentally for the 300m climb right at the start of the walk. Be careful on hot days – there is virtually no shade along the entire route.
Otherwise, it’s a pleasant walk offering beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains through the gaps in the vegetation.
The descent follows a fairly wide track which lacks a bit of charm but is comfortable.
As for the Jure stream, you can often hear it, but you rarely see it as it’s hidden by the vegetation.
