Provin walks

Circular hike organised for pupils from Étienne Dolet Secondary School and pupils from schools in Provin and Bauvin as part of the “Parcours du cœur” event. A circular hike passing through three villages—Provin, Annœullin and Bauvin—and following paths and roads. This route is particularly suitable for school groups.

This easy hike from Meurchin takes you through towns, marshes and plains. It can be done in all seasons so you can see the biodiversity throughout the year, all on good paths.

This hike, starting from the Leisure Centre on Rue du Clair, will take you past the surrounding ponds and woods with their rich biodiversity and a few climbs, not to mention the Flot de Wingles.

Hiking on the Haute-Deûle canal between Don and Ile aux Saules, between Bauvin and Billy-Berclau.In addition to the canal, you'll have the chance to discover beautiful natural areas such as Parc de La Louvière, Espace Chico Mendès and Île aux Saules.

This walk brings you into close contact with the canal's barges and birds. As the towpath is almost completely tarmac, this walk is particularly enjoyable in winter, when the paths are too muddy and impassable.

Explore the Parc de la Deûle by mountain bike. This is a suburban park built around the Canal de la Haute-Deûle. It was created to protect the irreplaceable water-capturing fields in the south of the Lille metropolitan area.Numerous facilities welcome visitors, encouraging them to respect the fragile environments.A pleasant ride along the Deûle and the Wavrin Marshes. An easy route offering a mix of riding on stony paths, towpaths and through the park.

A route that will take you to the summit of slag heap 107, a fully wooded slag heap. You will follow old mining sidings, which are former railway tracks. You will walk alongside ponds with a bucolic charm, then cross through wild woods or farm tracks with unobstructed views.

Starting from Herrin church, this pleasant walk uses sections of the Route de Naviettes and Route des Marlettes: links are available in the "Practical information" section below.

The route begins in the forest, with birdwatching available from observation posts. Then the landscape becomes more undulous as you climb Slag heap 115 (viewpoint over the coalfield) and return via the miners' cottages.

Slag heaps are not just piles of dead rocks; reactions are still taking place at their core. As evidence of these reactions, gaseous fumaroles escape from them. To see this for yourself, head to Harnes, starting from the Bois de Florimond, and make your way towards the slag heap. Then follow the signposted path known as the “Sentier des Fumerolles” (Fumaroles Trail), marked by concrete posts, which will take you to Slurry Heap 230. It is a surprising journey offering a wide variety of landscapes and points of interest: views of fumaroles, a viewpoint over the south-east of the mining basin, a viewpoint over the canyon, and more.

Do you prefer to use public transport, or do you not have your own transport to get to the start of the walk? This walk from station to station will allow you to enjoy some of the most beautiful natural areas of the Parc de la Deûle.Starting from Wavrin station, you can explore the lodge site, walk alongside the Deûle Canal at various distances, and finish with a visit to La Louvière Park before reaching Don-Sainghin station.

This walk, starting from Hulluch, will take you to the former Lens 13 bis pit, then on to Benifontaine. A bit of history: Hulluch is a town in the mining basin listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A route that takes you through the Fouquières marshes. You'll climb the wooded slag heap 83, offering a view of a mysterious artificial valley. You'll then head for slag heap 94 (staircase slag heap), passing the schlamm bins (storage of mining waste) and the Harnes fishing pond. Return along the path that runs alongside the Lens canal.

15 Km circuit in and around the Phalempin Forest. Start from the carpark opposite the Phalempin church.

A few kilometres from Lille lies a green oasis: the Phalempin Forest. Although modest in size (670 hectares), this forest is a rejuvenating place for hiking. Despite its small size, the forest boasts great biodiversity and legends. Once upon a time, in the village of La Neuville, on the edge of the Phalempin Woods, there was an inn called Leu Pindu with an unusual sign. It's up to you to discover the rest!

This walk, starting from the 9-9bis Mining Centre, will take you across both slag heaps without much difficulty, offering beautiful views of the slag heap range. The walk follows very good wooded paths on the first slag heap of the route. It is advisable to do the walk in the morning. You can extend the walk by crossing the Bois des Hautois, but there are a great many fallen trees.

Located in the heart of the mining basin, the Bois des Hautois in Oignies is a preserved site where hiking trails wind their way between slag heaps, ponds and pastures. The suggested route is situated in the immediate vicinity of the former 9-9 bis pithead, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 30 June 2012, and whose metal headframe is never far from view, helping you to find your way along the route.

A route that takes you from the former 9-9bis pit in Oignies, with its renovated buildings that will transport you back several decades. You will then cross the Bois de Gosse and stop at the wildlife observatory. The landscape will take on a more lunar appearance as you climb the slag heap, before finally returning to the pit via the old mining sidings (rail tracks).

Starting from Étang du Brochet, this hike will take you up Terril du Lavoir, before crossing the Méricourt mining village and then the necropolis of 10 March 1906, a memorial site following the mining disaster that claimed 1,099 lives.

A lovely walk along the banks of this artificial canal, created by man but returned to nature, where anglers and walkers meet daily, followed by a detour into the town of Seclin.

The Bois de la Lodge route in Santes is a walk comprising a short 1.3 km circular route and a longer 2.8 km circular route.Well-maintained paths, not very muddy even in wet weather.Dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.

A walk along the Tortue and Rigole du Nord canals, returning via the Deûle.

If you're a birdwatcher at heart, you'll appreciate the observatories in this nature reserve. You can also picnic on the benches under the trees or enjoy a meal in Mosaïc Park (booking required). This route is particularly green and shaded, making it the perfect place to spend a wonderful day with family or friends.

Starting from the Parc Mozaïc car park, a 15 km walk along the farm tracks of the Marais de la Deule, between Emmerin, Noyelles-lès-Seclin and Ancoisne.

This short hike starting from Loos-en-Gohelle will take you to the slag heap and the 11/19 site. On the way back, you will cross the British Military Cemetery and the Canadian Memorial at Hill 70, all on good paths.

Short and easy hike through the mining wasteland, slag heap and railway embankment, with a wooded section.

This hike is passable even when the paths are muddy, as they are very grassy. We spend a very pleasant time between the plain, the canal and the woods...

Starting from the Jardins du Louvre nursery, this round trip will take you along Eurovélo 5, through woods and town, to Saint-Auguste Church, where you will turn back.

If you have time, you can visit the museum dedicated to the Battle of Fromelles, which took place in July 1916. Next, you will skirt the village of Aubers, but you will see some of its ponds, which make this village a tourist destination for fishing and camping. You will also encounter the very respectable Tilleul du Joncquoy, which was planted there in 1490.

A short route with very little tarmac, allowing you to (re)discover the old lime tree of Joncquoy as well as the orchards of La Cliqueterie, which are particularly beautiful in autumn and spring.

This short hike starting from Liévin will take you through the gardens of the Louvre-Lens Museum and the Bollaert Delelis Stadium. You will cross the skate park before reaching the Jean Perrin public garden via well-maintained paths.

Just a stone's throw from Lille, an easy stroll through unspoilt countryside, passing through the Emmerin wellfields. The end is a little urban before entering the leisure and nature park.

This route will take you to the top of the flat 80 slag heap (shaped like a plateau), offering a beautiful view of the mining basin and the Artois hills. The rest of the route follows the course of the Souchez river in a green and peaceful setting.
