Park in the car park at the Carvin leisure centre.
(S/E) Go through the barrier and enter the centre via the path furthest north from the car park. Look out for a noticeboard listing the names of the children and the trees planted in their honour.
Walk on until you reach the junction with the straight path.
(1) Turn left onto it until you reach the tarmac road. Turn right, taking a hairpin bend.
Stay on this path, which remains straight; first cross the fields, then gradually you’ll return to a more wooded area.
Enter the woods and reach a crossroads of paths.
(2) Follow the GRP® to the left until you reach the foot of the slag heap.
(3) Start the climb up the slag heap via a small path on the left. Clearly visible at first, the path gradually disappears. Hold on tight as some sections are quite steep before reaching the summit.
Head back down the same path.
(3) Continue to the left. Walk around the slag heap anti-clockwise to reach another junction.
(4) Take the path on the right, a wide, flat path that gradually emerges from the wooded area
Rejoin Rue du Puits, passing by the old entrance to pit no. 12.
Turn right, take Rue du Puits, then turn right onto Rue du Pont de Grès.
Turn left onto Rue du Tour d'Horloge.
Walk up the street; you will see the gates of an SNCF centre on your right.
(5) Head towards these gates; the path you need to take is just to the right of the gates.
It heads off to the right and leads into the woods. It winds its way through the woods, sometimes giving you the impression you’re going round in circles, but don’t worry, this is the original route.
Follow this path for a while until you reach an open area near the slag heap.
(6) Turn left onto the wider path and quickly head right. Join an even wider, straight path that crosses the wooded area to reach a large junction near the ponds.
(7) Head right and cross a small bridge. You’ll come to the subsidence ponds caused by mining; walk alongside them. The pond is on your left. Cross the small bridges amongst the anglers to return to the car park where you started (S/E).
