Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, head towards the village of Bauvin (59221). The car park is located on Rue François Pouille in front of the Salle de Sport Pierre Legrain.

(S/E) With your back to the sports hall, go to the crossroads on the left and start the circular route by heading left towards the north on the Chemin d’Epinoy (yellow markings). At the small chapel, take the Chemin de la Briquetterie, which heads across the fields towards the south-west and joins a T-junction.

(1) Turn right towards the north onto the Chemin de l'Épinette. At the junction with Rue Léon Gambetta, turn left and continue along the path that runs as an extension of the street, heading south-west. Continue for about 600 m along this path until you reach a Fork in the road.

(2) Continue straight on, following the yellow markings. The path heads south and, after a left-hand bend, meets Chemin Blanc in the commune of Meurchin.

(3) At the junction, turn right and then right again onto the path that heads across the fields, heading south-west towards the Marais de la Briquette.

(4) Continue along the path between the two ponds until you reach the towpath of the Canal de la Deûle, then turn right heading north. Stay on the towpath for about 1.7 km until you reach the white gate and the first house, 50 m before the bridge.

(5) Leave the towpath and take the small path on the right, then cross the Deûle Canal, heading left onto Rue Jules Guesde. As you come off the first bridge, turn right towards the Ilôt de la Haute Deûle.

(6) Walk round the island on the right, first following the Deûle Canal, then the Aire Canal, before returning to the bridge to cross it again in the opposite direction. Take Rue Jules Guesde until the first junction on the left.

(7) Turn left onto the hairpin bend to reach the towpath and continue to the right towards the north-east until you reach a barrier.

(8) Leave the towpath and head right into the wooded area. Follow the yellow markings which lead you to the Michel Canin Ponds on the Riez à Vanneaux. Head towards the small graffiti-covered building and go round the two ponds on your right. In the middle of thesecond pond, you’ll come across a signpost.

(9) It directs you to go down the path and continue straight ahead. Follow the signs and the yellow markings leading to Rue Aragon. Turn left, then right into Rue Étienne Dolet. Continue until you reach Collège Étienne Dolet, then turn right into Rue Guy Mollet. Continue for about 150 m.

(10) At the bend in Rue Guy Mollet, turn left onto the Sentier du Long Bardeau heading south-east. Cross Rue Ferrer and continue along this path to Parc Pierre Bérégovoy, then cross the park.

(11) Leave the park and continue along Rue Pasteur, which joins Rue Louis Dorlet, heading south-east and following the yellow markings. At the junction with Rue de la Gare, turn left then right into the Résidence des Tilleuls. Continue straight ahead to reach Rue François Pouille and your car park (S/E).

A pleasant route with no major difficulties. A few muddy sections, but nothing you can’t handle!

The route starts with a circular route through the countryside, followed by some lovely sights along the Deule, such as ponds teeming with anglers, a brasserie in Meurchin, and then the Île aux Saules, which we discovered. I’d recommend this walk for its variety.

Between points 3 and 4, there’s a long stretch of very difficult terrain: tall grass, potholes and uneven ground make for an unpleasant walk, and it’s in full sun – we did this hike in June 2023 in temperatures of nearly 30 degrees.
Otherwise, it’s a pleasant walk in the shade along the canal and on the small island as well.
You’ll see ducks and other species of birds.
At the end, we shortened the route to avoid the urban section, which didn’t really interest us, and returned to the car park where we started.
We covered 10 km, so the original route is undoubtedly at least 12–13 km; we walk with a GPS tracker, so maximum reliability.
Prams and wheelchairs are not recommended, except for the section along the canal; stick to the canal section if you’re faced with the dilemma of whether to use a pram or a wheelchair.
