Montaud (Isère) walks

Easy walk on this “tooth” overlooking the Isère valley and offering an interesting view over the east foothills of Chartreuse.

From the village of Montaud, and more precisely from the hamlet of Le Coing, there is an interesting loop via the Fessole farm followed by a path along the edge of the Vercors cliffs.

This trail is an invitation to walk through medieval, rural and geological history and enjoy the natural beauty of an Isère valley deeply rooted between the alluvial plain and the cliffs of the Vercors. A great getaway for the curious, families, hikers and heritage enthusiasts!

This walk offers a multitude of additional routes to vary according to your mood! This one is designed to satisfy the most curious: visit the Glacière, Pas de la Clé and Becs de l'Orient, with superb panoramic views over the entire Isère valley. A flower-filled, refreshing walk with panoramic views.

Starting from the Plateau de Gève, take a walk in memory of the British airmen who supplied the Maquis du Vercors resistance fighters.

A wild hike starting from the Gève plateau in the magnificent Vercors forest. The route along the northern ridge of the Vercors offers breathtaking views of the Isère valley, the Grenoble conurbation, the Voiron area and the Chartreuse mountains.

A nice circular walk from the parking place at the Geve Plateau. There is a diversion to La Glaciere, which is a cave system, and a shorter diversion to Cabane 44, which was used by the resistance during WWII. The views from the ridge are great.

In Vercors, discover sharp limestone pavements, wildlife and flora. Hike from La Molière towards the east via Le Sornin (medium mountain range).

A short family walk offering excellent views for the effort. Best done on a day with good visibility. Please note: a hiker has informed us that in summer, at weekends, access to the plateau is restricted: you must take a shuttle bus (or a chairlift, which is quite far away).

A pleasant walk along the Ri d'Olon stream and then through walnut plantations. The first part of the route is through the woods and the second part is in the shade of walnut trees. This walk is suitable for young children and even pushchairs.

This beautiful hike on the Sornin plateau allows you to visit the large pylon overlooking the Isère valley at a place called La Dent du Loup.

A well-known local walk, presenting no difficulty. It takes you to the heights of Sassenage, as well as some pleasant neighbourhoods and the village centre. The "Batteries" are a defensive structure from the "iron belt" of the late 19th century: several battery emplacements, now empty of their artillery pieces. Find out about their former function.

A circuit between Chantesse and Notre Dame de l'Osier through the chestnut trees, allowing you to discover a very pleasant little chapel.

A family-friendly circuit starting from Chalais Monastery and ending at the eponymous Aiguille.

This low-altitude loop takes you up an old passage equipped with ladders by hunters, before crossing the formidable Roize and returning via Chalais and its monastery.

Please note: due to a major landslide, this hike is currently not possible. You start by walking along the Isère river through walnut trees. You then climb up the foothills of the Vercors, before returning via the Gaffe footbridge and the wild, steep-sided Gorgonnet gorges.

This hike will take you into the charming Gorges du Gorgonnet. It is a family-friendly route. However, caution is advised. Although the trail is wide and comfortable, there are no guardrails in some places, so keep an eye on children. At the end of the gorges, they can enjoy a natural swimming pool with particularly clear (and cold) water.

This is a loop south of the Chartreuse, at a modest altitude. It starts at Chalais Monastery, climbs up the cable-assisted passageway of the chimney, then heads towards the small village of Mont-Saint-Martin and returns via the Cuchet route. Traditional yellow directional signs indicate the distance to be covered and the time needed to reach the destinations concerned.

Walk through the Furon Gorges leading to the top of the village, where restaurants once welcomed Grenoble residents seeking coolness on Sundays. This short walk is very popular in hot weather, as the Furon area remains cool.

A diverse hike: forests, ridges, vast panoramic views...

An invigorating and challenging hike that alternates between woodland and ridge trails with views of both sides of the mountain.

From the hamlet of Le Truc at the north-eastern entrance to the village of Autrans, you can access La Molière mountain and discover the Isère valley and the city of Grenoble through a gap in the mountain. Higher up, you will see all the mountains surrounding Grenoble and its region. Don't look for the "pas" (step) of the bear as a paw print because, here as is often the case in the mountains, "pas" is a diminutive of "passage" (passage).

This is an easy and well-known hike in Autrans. The advantage of this hike is that you can start in the middle, at point (5), and shorten it by about 1 km at point (9). It's perfect for those with shorter legs! You'll see Autrans from a different perspective than from the ridges. Please note that the waterfall has a very low flow in dry weather, or even no flow at all. However, the charm of this place, combined with the forest walk, will delight you. Hike suggested by the local tourist office.

A nice walk which enjoys the shade of the trees for the uphill section. As described the Charande ridge is walked from North to South as this gives better views. The Refuge des Feneys makes for a nice place to stop. This walk descends from Pas de Bellecombe, but you could descend earlier if you wanted to; see notes.

A beautiful loop around the Grand Ratz, passing by the Roche Brune viewpoint with its breathtaking view of the Isère valley.

A remarkable walk in the Écouges forest, classified as a protected sensitive area. This walk is very family-friendly and suitable for children in pushchairs. However,be careful at the viewpoint as the walk is high up.

A very easy loop through this peaceful woodland. The chestnut wood is home to several protected bird species. This walk is best enjoyed in spring or on the last beautiful days of autumn.

This low peak and its twin opposite on the Vercors side, the Dent de Moirans, watch over the exit of the Isère as it flows quietly towards the Rhône and the entrance of rain and snow clouds pushed by the north winds. A remarkable viewpoint over the valleys, it is an ideal half-day walk.

Ridge walk from Pas de Bellecombe to La Molière via the highest point of Charande. Numerous viewpoints over the Alps and the Chartreuse.

A short loop offering a pretty passage through the Défilé du Coulou gorge to reach the Pas du Curé before descending to the Engins dam and then, following the Furon river, reaching the Pas de la Corne climb via theGR®9. Randonnée en huit partant des Trois Fontaines, un lieu baigné de fraicheur où il fait bon s'attarder en plein été.Le sentier commence dans la forêt en s'élevant dans une rude pente par de nombreux lacets. Il franchit des gradins rocheux pour rejoindre une bergerie d'alpage, le Chalet de Jusson. En haut de la prairie se présente la Cheminée de Jusson qui s'escalade sans difficulté pour parvenir au sommet et profiter d'un magnifique panorama. Descendre la crête et une partie du vallon de l'Hérétang puis remonter la Combe des Veaux pour retrouver le Chalet de Jusson. La descente par le Pas des Rochers de Pierre Taillée s'effectuant sur une sente en déshérence puis dans la forêt pour retrouver le parking conviendra aux randonneurs en quête de lieu secret. Here is another route for climbing Moucherotte, a little more challenging than the one starting from Lans-en-Vercors. The elevation gain is a little greater and the mountain trail requires good footwear. The 360° panorama is just as sublime and the view over the Grenoble basin is just as impressive.

A short family walk along the banks of the Fure river, starting from Rives. No difficulty whatsoever.

Climbing the Moucherotte via the east face from Saint-Nizier is a wild and little-known route. The return via the large ski jump (on foot, fortunately) is also unusual. Yellow and green markings, as well as white/red.

The perfect family walk: easy, fun, with trails that all lead to the same place, Pré Faure. This circuit is unique in that it passes through the "Désert Jean-Jacques Rousseau", worthy of the greatest romantics, climbs up to the Ferme Froussard, a historic site linked to the Resistance, and returns via a viewpoint offering a superb view of Grenoble and its valley.
