Plénouze Plateau

You’ll want to take in the stunning scenery! From the Plénouze plateau, there are views of the Chartreuse, Belledone and Écrins massifs, and you can see Mont Blanc.

Description of the walk

The start is from a car park in La Sure sur Autrans next to the first chairlift, the Quai lift.

(S/E) Cross the ski run and take the path that climbs to the right and then heads south. The climb along this path is straightforward. Cross the La Sure ski lift crossing, taking care of skiers heading uphill. Take the same path opposite, heading south.

(1) After a series of hairpin bends, leave this path and turn left, heading due north onto the Plénouze trail. Continue along this steep path for 250 m.

(2) Still climbing, turn right onto a very narrow path that winds its way southwards through the trees.

(3) Cross the forest road at the Font Chaude marker (watch out for cross-country skiers). Continue up this path heading north-east. On the left you can see a snow-capped peak – that is our destination.

(4) Pass the “sous Plénouze” signpost and continue climbing northwards, skirting the summit on the right to avoid a steep slope, especially if there are no tracks.

(5) At the summit, the view is breathtaking. Flat rocks are often visible for a picnic. From here, head back south-south-west, staying on the summit, then begin the descent towards the south-west. The slope is not too steep for snowshoeing. Pass the “Font Chaude” marker again.

(3) Take the forest track heading north for 800 m.

(6) Turn left (altitude 1528 m) onto a path that descends in a straight line towards the south. Join the path taken on the ascent.

(2) Continue straight ahead along the route you took on the way up. The return journey is a gentle walk along this snow-covered road back to the car park (S/E). Watch out for skiers when crossing the slopes.

Notes

Plan this hike for calm, windless weather during a "blue storm"! Make sure you have fairly wide snowshoes if there are no tracks already made. The morning is best as the snow is harder.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

If the weather is fine, from “Sous Plénouze” take the forest track marked for cross-country skiers and head to “La Molière” – it’s a 1.4 km walk there. Stay to the side of this track so as not to get in the way of cross-country skiers.

Please note: crossing the downhill ski runs is prohibited. We were stopped by a member of the security team who made us head back down via snowshoe trail no. 8. This is entirely understandable, as the slope is steep and, when it’s busy, I imagine it becomes virtually impossible to cross on foot. The best option would therefore be to park at the first ski lift (the one the hike crosses) and head up via the marked snowshoe trail no. 8 (to the right of the ski lift). Coming from the original car park, it is possible to reach this path by taking the wide track alongside the road (which is what we did to get back to the car), but it’s not particularly worthwhile.
Apart from that, a lovely hike despite the wind at the summit!

A stunning spot. The steep section between 1 and 2 was really tough, especially with all that snow on the ground.
It was a bit tricky finding the way back after the summit, when everything was white...

A really lovely walk. Not enough snow for snowshoes, but it was a lovely hike. The weather was
. The view was clear. A very good route to get back into the swing of things. The panoramic view over the plateau is simply magical. We had a picnic facing Belledone.... Well done on this lovely route.
We took a slight detour to make it circular so we didn’t have to go back along the same path.

A lovely, easy hike. There wasn’t enough snow for snowshoes that day, but that didn’t spoil the superb panoramic view from the plateau.
Thanks for this post!
