He asked him to split the rock in two to let the erratic waters of the Laizon pass through and to clean a fleece there to restore its immaculate whiteness, after which the devil would be master of his soul. The devil split the rock in two but could not restore the fleece to its immaculate whiteness because the hermit, to save his soul, had given the devil a goatskin.
