Meix-devant-Virton walks

Leaving Meix-devant-Virton via roads with light to moderate traffic and arriving in Halanzy via similar roads does not mean the entire route is like this. No, there are quiet country lanes with beautiful views, farm tracks that turn into woodland paths, and a steep downhill stretch through a neighbourhood of holiday homes. And then there’s the River Ton, which sets the tone in its valley, along with more unexpected and unlikely paths and tracks. As I’m staying with a local, my stopping point is open to chance.

This second stage can be covered in a morning, leaving you free to enjoy an afternoon swimming in the Semois and/or a walk around its meander. If you’ve come to attend the street arts festival, you’ll have time to pitch your tent and grab a bite to eat before the first show on Saturday afternoon.

For this second stage, if the cockerel wakes us up early enough after a night’s camping on the farm, we’ll have no trouble packing up the tent and cycling the 30 km to Chassepierre,We’ll even be able to visit Orval Abbey halfway there. We’ll be cycling through the forest for most of the way.

What a lovely, enchanting walk! Enter the great Gaume forest. Passing through another beautiful high forest, you’ll follow a magnificent path winding through a secluded valley, where you’ll discover the Trou des Fées right at its heart. This astonishing sand dune is made up of several galleries carved out by natural erosion.

A pleasant walk passing through Montauban, the Fourneau Marchand fish market and crossing the old railway line. In summer, you can enjoy a drink on the terrace at the Fourneau Marchand!

Starting from Bellefontaine, a small village in the Gaume region, this is a lovely walk through the forests of Gaume to Meix-devant-Virton, following both sides of the Chevratte valley. Along the way, you’ll discover the Gros Cron (a remarkable geological formation in the Belgian Gaume) and its spring.

Walk between France and Belgium from Orval Abbey to the small village of Williers on the French side. Hike along forest trails, guided by the murmur of a stream. Encounter a herd of Highland cows and, more unusually, observe traces of Gallo-Roman remains.

A short walk along the border that will allow you to discover or rediscover Orval Abbey.

A beautiful gravel route with varied landscapes and stunning views. It’s a chance to pass by Orval Abbey and perhaps stop off at the Brasserie de La Rulles. This route takes in a variety of surfaces, including roads, farm tracks and forest paths. Please note: the route is quite challenging, with some steep climbs along the way.

Start at the Ermitage de Saint-Léger, continue towards the Trou du Pérou and its waterfall, pass by the Étang du Fourneau David, then the Source Pétrifiante, and finish by crossing the Bois de Saint-Léger.

The magnificent Thibessart Pond, on the Mandebras Stream, features a bird and dragonfly observation point. An educational trail has been created there, focusing on dragonflies.

From Florenville to Meix-devant-Virton, our path will take us along a succession of forest tracks and paths and gravel roads. It also means leaving the gentle riverbank behind to venture deep into the steeply wooded massif on the southern slope of the Semois.

This walk is simply intended as a chance to recharge your batteries in the forest, in this case the Neufchâteau forest. Passing through the Forges de Mellier and the Étang du Cul de l'Oie.

The village of Chiny is renowned for its storytelling festival. Located on the border between the Ardennes and Gaume regions, Chiny is ideal for walking. Come and discover its magnificent views, nestled among the meanders of the Semois. Revised route

For a return trip to Metz in a single day, this route takes you to Longuyon station. Provided you set off early enough, you’ll be able to visit Orval Abbey, then the citadel of Montmédy, stop for lunch by the Étang de Charency-Vezin and reach Longuyon by mid-afternoon.

For most of the route, this third stage follows roads suitable for cycling, smooth paths and cycle lanes. The Semois meanders so much that it is impossible to ‘follow’ it along its entire length, but this route crosses it numerous times and heads all the way up to its source in Arlon!The ride takes you through the Gaume and the Arlon region, away from the main roads with heavy motor traffic.

Starting from Azy, a hamlet in the municipality of Florenville, discover the Semois, the Dolmen d'Azy and the Point de Vue de Bohahan.

Starting from Chassepierre, this route through the Gaume region allows time to visit remarkable cultural sites and another of the ‘most beautiful villages in Wallonia’. This involves a few detours, but fewer than those along the Semois, where the route cuts across several bends! The route description refers to the ‘nodes’ of the cycle network developed in Belgium. The route includes a loop through Arlon to the viewpoint at the top of Knippchen, which can be done in the evening or the following morning.

After reaching the Château du Pont d’Oye, the walk begins with a pleasant route through the woodland, skirting the ponds before moving away from them to join a secondary gravel road. This takes us over hill and dale through the forest up to the heights of Martelange, a border town between Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Explore the forest to discover the Roche Perette and then the Rocher du Chat viewpoint, follow the Semois twice and finish at the château and the Épioux pond.

The route is mainly through woodland. Choose autumn for the colours or a sunny day to enjoy the scent of pine trees warmed by the sun. A moderate hike in terms of length, with no difficulties to be expected.

For families out hiking, curious holidaymakers, and forest lovers… Starting from the heart of the Anlier Forest, the forest visitors’ route takes you along the most beautiful paths and tracks to meet those who experience the forest on a daily basis. After a stop at the landscape viewing platform, you’ll encounter life-size sculptures of characters typical of the forest throughout this 10-kilometre walk. Through information panels, they’ll tell you about their passion and their work, as well as how they go about sharing this precious environment. One by one, you’ll come across the forest ranger, the red deer, the timber merchant, the hunter, the woodcutter, the forager, the logger, the hiker, the mountain biker and the naturalist. And perhaps some other unexpected encounters… Keep your eyes peeled – even in the deepest silence, life is everywhere in the forest!

From the Roche du Chat viewpoint via the Vanne des Moines, a short forest trail starting from Les Epioux.

A complete and accessible hike in the heart of Les Épioux. From the car park, you descend towards the Semois to follow the river along an almost flat section. The route then alternates between quiet roads, forest paths and beautiful climbs, notably towards the Château des Épioux and the wooded heights. You descend towards the Semois through the trees, following increasingly mossy streams, before reaching the Vanne des Moines and climbing towards the Roche du Chat.

Hike in the Épioux region, above Chassepierre, between Chassepierre and Herbeumont. The route follows the Semois for much of the way, through sun-dappled forests, peaceful riverbanks and secluded footpaths. With its significant elevation gain, the route alternates between steep climbs and gentler sections, offering beautiful views of the valley. You’ll also come across a few unusual sculptures along the way, which add an artistic touch to this immersion in nature.

This 12.5 km circular route starting from Sainte-Cécile takes you to explore the new Himalayan-style footbridge overlooking the Semois, before heading into the magnificent forests of the Épioux estate. Three superb viewpoints line the route: the Castelain, the Vanne des Moines and the spectacular Rocher du Chat. The return journey follows a lovely moss-covered path before passing under the footbridge and then crossing it a second time. A very varied walk that alternates between forests, panoramic views, rocky outcrops and the river.

Discover one of the region’s must-do walks, starting from the charming village of Sainte-Cécile! Ideal for visitors and lovers of stunning panoramic views, this superb circular route starts at the beginning of Rue de la Belle Hôtesse. Right from the start, you’ll cross the famous Sainte-Cécile Himalayan footbridge. Suspended above the Semois, it offers a unique experience at a height of 30 metres. The trail then winds its way into the magnificent Gaume forest for a lively yet accessible circular route. You’ll climb up to the famous Rocher du Chat, a spectacular rocky viewpoint offering breathtaking views over the valley. After taking in the stunning scenery, the return journey is a leisurely stroll through the woods, before crossing the footbridge once more to return to the village. An unmissable, fun and photogenic walk for visitors!

Let’s set off to discover the treasures and natural beauty of the Semois in its entirely wooded stretch between Sainte-Cécile and Herbeumont. As well as views of various meanders and the medieval castle of Herbeumont from the heights, the walk follows the river upstream for several kilometres before reaching the Himalayan-style footbridge, which was opened in early summer 2026. Although the route follows the left bank exclusively, crossing the Semois back and forth at height on the footbridge is an experience not to be missed (except for those prone to vertigo).

Discover the rocky outcrops of the Rocher du Saltire, and perhaps its heather depending on the season, as well as the view over the Semois from Le Castelain.

A lovely walk along the Semois on a wooded path with little elevation gain except for a short but steep climb at the end on a narrow path to return to the starting point.

From Château d’Herbeumont, set off via the Herbeumont Viaduct into the Bois de Conques, home to the Grotte des Moines and the 17th-century Redoute des Mauleus. Follow the Semois river, discover the Castelain viewpoint, and return via the Bois de Sainte-Cécile and the Libaipire viewpoint overlooking the Tombeau du Chevalier and Herbeumont Castle.

Passing by La Potale and the Chapel of Saint Barbara, patron saint of slate miners, set off to discover the remains of the Hermitage of Saint Bernard of Bertrix, starting from La Roche aux Corbeaux in Herbeumont. Along the way, look out for the various slate quarries known as La Côte de Champion, La Goutelle Husson and Linglé.
