The Montauban Spring and Fourneau Marchand

A pleasant walk passing through Montauban, the Fourneau Marchand fish market and crossing the old railway line. In summer, you can enjoy a drink on the terrace at the Fourneau Marchand!

Description of the walk

Start from the Red Cross car park, located opposite "La sapinière".

(S/E) At the far end of the car park, take the path running alongside the road towards Ethe.

(1) At the first junction, take the second path leading up into the woods, towards Ethe.

(2) When you reach the crossroads, turn left and continue for about 1.2 km.

(3) At the T-junction, take the path on the left and head down towards the road, cross it and follow the path on the left for a few metres until you reach a three-way junction.

(4) Take the small path on the right. When you reach the junction, continue straight ahead. Join the Ravel and continue to the junction with the Route de Buzenol.

(5) As all the paths leading down to Montauban are private, you will need to walk down the road. You will arrive at the Montauban site at the second right-angle bend.

(6) At this second bend, continue straight on towards the bins. Step over the small stream and walk along the edge of the pond on the wall surrounding it. Continue towards Buzenol for about a hundred metres.

(7) At the end of the car park, take the path that climbs up to the right. At the junction, keep to the right to walk alongside the tower and make your way to the spring.

(8) Step over the spring and climb up to the ruins. Walk alongside the ruins until you reach a path leading down to the right. Take this path and continue until you reach the road. Walk down this road to the junction.

(9) Walk down Rue du Musée, then take the small street leading uphill to the right, just past the fountain. Cross the road, take the steep little street, then turn left immediately. Follow the path for just over a kilometre. When you reach the path running alongside the stream, turn right.

(10) At the junction, turn left and then right. Continue for about 500 m, then take the path opposite the Fourneau Marchand. Carry on to the road and cross it carefully. Take the path opposite, which can be damp at times, keeping to the left at all times. Pass to the left of the abandoned building.

(11) At the junction with another path, take the one on the left and continue along the long straight stretch that runs alongside a field and through a pine forest.

(12) At the junction with a wide stony path, turn left. Stay on this path and cross the railway line. Shortly afterwards, at the junction with another stony path, cross over and continue straight ahead.

(13) A small path lies ahead of you; follow it until you reach a right-hand bend. At this bend, turn left and then, after about fifteen metres, take a small, disused path on the right.

(14) At the junction with a wider path, turn left. When you reach the road, cross it carefully and turn right onto the small road that runs alongside the main road, continuing until you reach the Red Cross car park (S/E).

A lovely walk through the Belgian woods. The weather was a bit damp, but perfect for a stroll.

A lovely forest walk exploring the ironworks of Montauban along pleasant paths and trails. The sites at Montauban and Le Cron are particularly charming. The only ‘downsides’ are the stretch of road between the old Buzenol station and the Montauban car park (quite a lot of traffic) and a few short sections through areas scarred by logging (unfortunately becoming increasingly common in our beautiful region).
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to enjoy the terrace at La Pêcherie du Fourneau Marchand, as it was closed. However, the terrace at La Sapinière restaurant, near the starting point, was open!
