Description of the walk

Start from the church in Villers-devant-Orval: parking nearby.

(S/E) Take Rue des Casernes and, after passing the Orval footpath on your right, you will reach a wayside shrine at a fork in the road.

(1) Take the small road on the left and follow it to a mobile phone mast.

(2) Turn left at the next path. At the next fork, keep left to go downhill to the Ferme du Bois-Le-Comte.

(3) Turn right towards the Source du Ourdel, located on the left-hand side of the path.

(4) Continue in the same direction. At the next junction, go straight on, ignoring the paths to the right and left, and follow a small, flat path to reach the border.

(5) Cross the border, continue for about 200 m before turning right to climb and then descend along a path marked by old boundary stones demarcating the Kingdom of France and the Orval Estate. Join a wide path marked with multiple signposts and keep left to reach the bottom of the Williers Stream valley.

(6) Take a sharp right-hand bend and descend slightly to follow the course of the stream. Ignore the path descending to the right and shortly afterwards you will reach a fork: information board, tables and benches.

(7) Head left, cross the Ruisseau de Williers and a wetland area via a boardwalk, then walk along flat ground beside the Prés de l'Abbaye d'Orval (nature reserve) to emerge onto the N88 near the abbey. Continue to the large crossroads.

(8) Turn left, then quickly turn left onto an uphill path. Shortly afterwards, head down to the right towards the abbey: you can visit the ruins of the old abbey and the museum.

(9) Return to the large crossroads via the road.

(8) Cross the N88 again and head towards Villers-devant-Orval along the N840. Leave the road to the right at the first bend and head towards the forest until you reach the first crossroads.

(10) Turn left and head towards the Bois de la Vierge (bench) at a fork in the path.

(11) Ignore the path leading uphill to the right and continue to the wayside shrine you passed on the way out.

(1) Keep going in the same direction. At the next fork, turn left onto the Sentier d'Orval. After the cemetery, turn right onto Rue Théophile Noël to return to the church and the starting point (S/E).

Just wanted to say thank you for this lovely route.
As a newcomer to Visorando, I hadn’t seen your description of the walk, but in the end your route was more than enough 😉.
A really lovely walk, a complete change of scenery, and the stop at Orval was much appreciated 🍻.

A walk on Christmas Day, so it was quiet. A pleasant route, with no difficulties. The cheese and Orval beer are excellent! The monks are smiling down on us.

Right from the start, we had to search hard to find the famous Rue des Casernes, even though it would have been so simple to give directions relative to the church. After that, we never saw the border crossing, nor the path marked with multiple signposts, so we never reached point 6. We rejoined the route a little beyond point 7. The instructions when we reached point 8 for the first time were unclear too; we didn’t realise we had to cross the road and went straight up into the woods, unsure if it was the right path. We also went wrong at point 10. In short, there’s certainly room for improvement… Because the walk is absolutely lovely…

We set off in the blazing heat, with temperatures reaching 33°C in the shade – a less than pleasant start on a very exposed stretch, followed by a brilliant route through the woods, a refreshing dip in the icy waters of the Williers stream, and a wonderful chance to immerse ourselves in the natural setting of Orval Abbey before rediscovering all its beauty...
It’s a shame that the local council hasn’t provided a path through the woods to avoid the road used as a car park on the way to the abbey. This road, whilst not particularly pleasant, does at least offer a view of the old forges site.
