This second stage can be covered in a morning, leaving you free to enjoy an afternoon swimming in the Semois and/or a walk around its meander. If you’ve come to attend the street arts festival, you’ll have time to pitch your tent and grab a bite to eat before the first show on Saturday afternoon.

Description of the route

(S) Leave the farm and head up the tarmac road on the left until you reach the junction.

(1) Turn left onto Rue Jean-Louis Orban for 30 metres, then take the path on the right and you’ll come to a concrete farm track.

(2) Carry on to the right, then continue straight ahead along the road towards Bellefontaine.

(3) In the village, take Rue d’Orval on the left for 1.5 km, then take the cycle path on the right until you reach junction 46.

(4) Take the road on the left for 500 metres, heading towards junction 45, which passes in front of the Marais de la Breuvanne.

(5) Follow the path to the right, which leads, after 1 km, to junction 44, the junction with the Voie d’Orval.

(6) Cross the road and cycle 4 km, keeping straight on, along the path which becomes Rue du Bois Brûlé towards junction 61 until you reach a junction with a road running alongside the railway line on the left, 250 metres before the signposted route crosses it.

(7) At this junction, turn right onto Rue de la Gare, continue for 300 metres, then turn left onto Rue Nouvelle and follow it for 150 metres.

(8) Turn right onto the path, cross Rue de Bouillon and continue straight ahead along Rue de Fêve Champs until you reach the junction in Izel.

(9) Cross Rue des Quatre Vents and continue straight ahead along Rue de la Percherie, which joins a signposted route towards junction 37. First turn left then right to follow Rue des Chasseurs Ardennais, then turn right onto Rue du Haut Courtil until you reach a three-way junction.

(10) Head left towards junction 28 via Rue de la Saboterie, then take the cycle path after crossing Avenue Germain Gilson. After 2.5 km, the path runs alongside the railway line for 250 m before joining a road.

(11) Cross the railway line via the bridge and rejoin the path on the right, following it alongside the railway line towards junction 26.

(12) At the station, continue along the tarmac road, then turn right onto Rue de Neufchâteau towards junction 25.

(13) Cross the Semois via Rue des Îles and cycle towards Lacuisine until you reach the next path on the left.

(14) Follow this for 100 m, cross the railway line, then follow it to the right until you are about fifty metres from the road.

(15) Continue left onto a new track until you reach Rue de Martué.

(16) Turn left, cross Martué then the Semois again and carry on to junction 23.

(17) Turn right towards junction 20 for 75 metres. At the three-way junction, continue straight ahead towards Laiche to reach this junction more directly. At the end of the street, keep to the right towards junction 20.

(18) Cross the Semois then head up to the right towards junction 12.

(19) Take the hairpin bend to the left and head for Chassepierre via the Route de Davihat. Make your way to the campsite or your accommodation (E).

Notes

In Belgium, cycle-friendly routes are marked by a system of “nodes” (junctions) spaced less than 2 km apart. These routes appear in pink on the “OpenStreetMap Cycle (World)” base map. The green arrows fixed along the route, at cycle height, indicate the number of the next node.
(S) Leave the campsite by heading up Chemin de la Veille.
(3) The route avoids the centre of Florenville and its shops. If you need to stock up on supplies, it’s best to do so in Bellefontaine, for example atthe community grocery shop.
If you’re doing this route on thefirst weekend after 15 August, you’ll arrive at the green car park where you can pitch your tent.
(S/E) To reach the Cabrettes campsite, turn right 200 metres after the bridge over the Semois. The campsite entrance is on the left. The festival’s official campsite is in the same place but on the right, on the meadow.

Worth a visit

The Servais trail, created in 2013, consists of 13 information panels on the birds that nest in the Gaume region, illustrated by the comic book artist Jean-Claude Servais, who lives in Jamoigne. (19) Along this final stretch of the walk, there’s a lovely view of the village of Chassepierre, nestled at the far end of the bend in the Semois as you approach it.

For most of the route, this third stage follows roads suitable for cycling, smooth paths and cycle lanes. The Semois meanders so much that it is impossible to ‘follow’ it along its entire length, but this route crosses it numerous times and heads all the way up to its source in Arlon!The ride takes you through the Gaume and the Arlon region, away from the main roads with heavy motor traffic.

Starting from Chassepierre, this route through the Gaume region allows time to visit remarkable cultural sites and another of the ‘most beautiful villages in Wallonia’. This involves a few detours, but fewer than those along the Semois, where the route cuts across several bends! The route description refers to the ‘nodes’ of the cycle network developed in Belgium. The route includes a loop through Arlon to the viewpoint at the top of Knippchen, which can be done in the evening or the following morning.
