Mafate via the Rivière des Galets

The Cirque de Mafate is accessible from many different points. The flat track is easy to follow and suitable for everyone. Families can come on this walk and turn back at any time. You can even take a dip in the Rivière des Galets. The track runs straight ahead, winding its way between rock faces that grow ever higher as you go.

Description of the walk

Access: head towards Le Port via the N1 and exit at the Cap Sacré-Cœur junction. Take the first exit if coming from Saint-Paul and the third if coming from Saint-Denis. Take the second exit again at the next roundabout, then the first at the following one. At the bend, continue straight on along Rue de la Liberté and take the first track on the left. At the next junction, turn right onto the Route de Mafate, which is rather rough. Turn onto the first track that descends to the right into the ravine. Park at the end of the track.

(S/E) Head off to the right and join the track leading to the Cirque de Mafate. You’ll then cross the Rivière des Galets for the first time. Follow the river for nearly 8 kilometres. It then runs close to the left bank and Ilet Savannah.

(1) You will then pass close to the Canal Lemarchand, of which only ruins remain. Cross the Rivière des Galets a second and then a third time. The vegetation is rather dry and the route is completely exposed. However, it is flat and provides good training for the climb that follows. The slopes gradually steepen, reaching an elevation gain of nearly 1,000 metres towards the end of the track.

Pass in front of Îlet Malidé, situated on the left bank. On the left bank, the Canalisation des Orangers can be seen 600 metres above. To the left, Piton Pierre Jacques and Piton Sucre are visible 700 metres above the river. Far ahead, the Crête d’Aurère gradually comes into view, followed by the Roche Écrite and the Crête de la Marianne at the end of the track. It takes at least 1 hour 30 minutes’ walk to reach Îlet Flamand, dominated by Îlet Cambour.
Stay on the track until you reach Deux Bras, situated just past Îlet Flamand and after about 10 river crossings.

(2) From here, it is possible to head off in other directions. Then return to the starting point via the same route (S/E)

A lovely walk. However, a local by-law prohibits access to pedestrians, cyclists and cars. So we parked in the car park just before the sign and decided to give it a go. We weren’t the only ones. Lots of 4x4s use the track, so you need to be a bit careful. We crossed 13 fords. There are large boulders laid out to help you cross. At 1.90m tall, I had no trouble. My wife, who is 1.55m tall, couldn’t make it (they were too far apart). So she had to wade through the water, which meant her shoes got wet. If you’re not afraid of water, go for it – it’s well worth it.

I counted 11 foundation slabs.
At this time of year, in February, the water was sometimes up to my thighs.
It was fun, but a bit worrying when it came to keeping my things dry.
So, given these conditions, I’d rate the hike as quite difficult, and it took me 7 hours.
I didn’t leave my high-top walking boots out to dry for too long, but I did wear my water shoes – perfect for the shallow fords, though painful on the pebbles whilst walking.
Most of the walkers were wearing low-cut shoes; a few were in flip-flops
I’ll need to kit myself out differently next time
Thanks for this route and the directions
