Macra - Ruata Valle

The village of Macra is ideally situated to start this route. A car park on the outskirts of the village, the Maira stream which is truly at the heart of these seven stages, and small, well-kept hamlets to help you get into the spirit of Occitania. Along the way, you’ll see votive pillars, religious frescoes on the façades of some houses and numerous chapels. At the end of the route, the hamlet of Ruata Valle is entirely dedicated to the Locanda Codirosso.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Route of Occitan Piedmont

Description of the walk

Head to the village of Macra and, at the western exit, take the first road on the left to reach a car park along the Torrent de Maira.

(S) Head back up towards the village, cross through it and arrive at the Strada Provinciale 422.

(1) Cross the SP422 and follow the P.O. (Percorsi Occitani) north-eastwards (this is also the start of the Sentiero dei ciclamini). Reach the hamlet of Langra.

(2) Continue along the P.O. to the left, heading north-west. Follow the path through the forest; the terrain then becomes less wooded. Begin a fairly steep climb to a small, unnamed pass. Superb view over the Val Maira.

(3) Continue along the P.O., heading west, to the hamlet of Centenero.

(4) Return to the second hamlet, Caudano, again via the P.O.

(5) On leaving Caudano, leave the P.O. South on your left and take the P.O. on your right, which runs alongside the road for about 500 metres. You will reach a junction.

(6) Take the path on the right towards Ruata Valle (signposted), continuing until you reach the junction with the path leading up to the Santa Maria chapel.

(7) Admire the chapel, perched high up, then continue straight on to the hamlet of Ruata Valle (Locanda Codirosso) (E).

Notes

Locanda Codirosso

The route of this hike follows the Percorso Occitano trail for the most part.
On maps, particularly OpenStreetMap, it is named Percoso(i) Occitano(i) and often simply P.O. or PO.
The route markings – signposts and trail markings – make extensive use of these names.
For ease of reading, the abbreviation P.O. is used when the route follows the Percorso Occitano.
