Park in the car park at Saint-Hughes church.
(S/E) Take the path that runs alongside the cemetery heading north-west. Your grassy path crosses a meadow. It leads you to the edge of a wood, towards a signpost.
(1) Signpost “Flin – 880m”. Follow the direction of La Martinière and enter the woods. The path descends steeply. You’ll reach a stream which you cross via a dilapidated concrete bridge, though it’s still sturdy.
(2) Once you have crossed the bridge, you will see a stream on your left, which you cross either using planks (if you’re lucky) or by balancing on stones. Continue along a narrow path that first leads into a high forest, crosses another stream via two planks, then climbs up a meadow heading south-west. You’ll have a stream on your left (if you can’t see it, you’ll hear it). You’ll reach the hamlet of Les Michallets and a small road with a worn tarmac surface. Follow it to the left. Pass an old sawmill that has been converted into a sheep and goat farm. Your small road naturally branches off to the left and begins to climb steeply. Follow it to the hamlet of Cherlieu (signposted ‘Cherlieu-calvaire – 930m’).
(3) You’ll reach the D57b. Turn left onto it. Take care, as there may be traffic. Before a small bridge over a stream, continue along a path that runs alongside the road to the right. You’ll come out onto a meadow. Head back down to the road when it’s level with you. A little further on, cut across a bend by taking a short path to the right.
(4) When you reach the hamlet of Les Égaux, take the small path that climbs to the right. Cross the slopes of the small Les Égaux ski resort (the main ones on your right, the beginners’ slope on the left). Sign: “Les Égaux – 960m” towards Les Epallets. You’ll come to a barn and go round it on the left (sign: towards Brévardière). The path descends quite steeply. You’ll come out onto a small road, which you take to the right. At a fork in the road, go left towards the holiday centre.
(5) Just past the chapel and the holiday camp building, take the path on the left. It descends towards a stream, which you cross before heading back up a small road, the Route du Col du Coq.
(6) Turn left and head down towards the hamlet of La Brévardière, which you pass through.
(7) You’ll come to a complex crossroads. Signposted: towards Saint-Hugues. Take the second small road on your left (no vehicles allowed). Cross a narrow bridge, which is in poor condition. You’ll come out onto a small road which you follow to the right. You’ll be within sight of the church at Saint-Hugues, and therefore our starting point (S/E).
