Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Place de la Mairie, near the Tourist Office.

(S/E) Turn right towards the town hall, then immediately take the path on the left leading to Plan de Ville.

(1) Cross this square to the left, then head towards Carlinière along the path on the right marked in yellow. Follow this path downhill, then cross the Couzon via a small concrete footbridge and continue to the Chemin de Patassière.

(2) Carry on to your left along the road towards La Correrie, passing through the hamlet of Carlinière.

(3) At the bend at the end of this road, in Bernière, take the path branching off to the right alongside a typical Chartreuse-style barn. As you walk towards La Correrie, enjoy a magnificent view of the Dent de Crolles and Chamechaude overlooking the various hamlets of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. Then continue along this path, which will take you down a slightly steep descent to the Porte de l’Enclos, the gateway to the Désert de la Grande Chartreuse. This will bring you to the departmental road linking Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and Saint-Laurent-du-Pont.

(4) Turn right and follow it for about 300 metres , taking care to watch out for traffic. Then leave the road and take a small path leading uphill to the right, marked in yellow and red. This will lead you higher up onto the road to the Musée de la Grande Chartreuse. You’ll finish by following this road to the right for a few hundred metres until you reach the museum entrance.

(5) Turn back and follow the same route in the opposite direction. About fifty metres before reaching point 4, cross the road and the footbridge. Admire the sculptures depicting Saint Bruno’s arrival in the Chartreuse. Take the path that climbs up to the left towards the Grand Logis. Pass between the Chapel of Saint-Hugues and the Hôtellerie du Grand Logis, the former residence for the monastery’s guests.

(6) Continue along the road to the left, which descends towards the Diat. Cross the D520b and then the Pont de la Dame over the Guiers Mort. Follow the Chemin de la Dame, which rejoins the departmental road; follow this to the left with care until you reach the junction with the Diat.

(7) Cross it carefully and continue opposite along the path between the houses, known as the Chemin du Couzon, which takes you back to the departmental road. Cross the road to take the Sentier des Quatre Chemins, which leads back up to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. Cross the departmental road again, take the path opposite and head for the Place de la Mairie and the car park (S/E).

A really lovely route, though a bit bumpy in places
The last kilometre is the hardest, especially the 500 metres with the steepest gradient
Otherwise, it was perfect, even with the short stretch of road you have to take to get to the path
We were able to fit in a visit to the Grande Chartreuse museum 😊

We suggest continuing the walk between the Grande Chartreuse Museum and the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. This adds 4 km there and back, but it’s well worth it.
