The Égaux trail

A lovely, varied walk with a beautiful view over the Saint-Pierre valley. The ‘moderate’ difficulty rating is solely due to a steep climb halfway through the walk (110 m elevation gain over 600 m). Otherwise, it is relatively short, easy and follows good paths.

Description of the walk

Start from the churchyard of Saint-Hugues Church.

(S/E) Leave the church forecourt by heading north up the road (you will have the summit of the Grand Som in front of you). Turn left towards the cemetery and walk along its left-hand side. A grassy path, in the middle of a large meadow, leads you to the edge of a wood.

(1) When you reach the edge of the woodland, take the wide path on the left, avoiding the descent into the woodland directly in front of you. You are now on a wide forest track. Further on, a path joins from your left. Continue south-west. You come out onto a small road. Head up the hill on the left to cross the hamlet of Cherlieu.

(2) In the centre of the hamlet, when you reach the D57b, turn right onto it. Very soon, before the end of the hamlet, turn left uphill towards Chamechaude. The climb becomes increasingly steep for quite some time. You follow a stream on your left. A ford takes you to the other side of the stream. Further on, the path turns sharply to the left. You reach a junction.

(3) Turn left, leaving the yellow markings behind. Ignore a faint path on your right. Further on, the path turns sharply to the right. Ignore the path opposite, which is blocked by tree trunks. You emerge almost at the top of the Égaux ski run.
Enjoy the magnificent view over the valleys of Saint-Hugues and Saint-Pierre, as well as the summit of the Grand Som.

(4) You descend the slope between the two rows of ski lifts. Once you reach the hamlet of Les Égaux, turn right.

(5) When you reach what appears to be a dead end, head down the sunken path on the left. You’ll come to a small road. Take it to the right, then very quickly head down to the left. At a T-junction, go up to the right. You’ll arrive at a large, renovated building with a chapel on its right.

(6) Walk past it and immediately turn left. Descend into the Orme riverbed, cross it, and climb back up on the opposite side. You’ll emerge onto a small road leading to the Col du Coq. Follow it down to the left.

(7) You enter the hamlet of Brévardière. You cross through it (there is an inn selling saffron). When the road curves slightly to the right, you can continue straight on along the grassy path. Back on the tarmac, you head straight ahead. Then, almost immediately, head down to the left to cross an old footbridge. Your small road bends to the right. Continue straight on to reach the church of Saint-Hugues, which you can visit (S/E).

Notes

The walk starts on the forecourt of Saint-Hugues Church, a small village in the Chartreuse region, situated between the Col de Porte (to the south) and Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (to the north).
This walk is not possible in winter, even on snowshoes, as you would be using the ski run.

Worth a visit

Halfway through the walk, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the Saint-Pierre valley and the summit of the Grand Som from the Saint-Hugues trail.
You will pass through several typical Chartreuse hamlets.
On your return, the museum in the church of Saint-Hugues, which houses works by Arcabas, is well worth a visit.

Good route.
Mostly shaded except at the very beginning and end.
At point 4, instead of going down (tall grass in August), continue along the side of the slope. When you reach the crossroads after the top of the chairlift, go down to the left onto the path. This will take you directly to point 5.

A lovely walk that alternates between paths, small roads and trails. No technical difficulty apart from two fairly steep climbs. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
Low elevation gain, suitable for most people.

A great walk; no difficulties apart from those described in the guide (it’s quite a climb).
Please note: the path is blocked by trees => They have removed the trees

A very pleasant walk with plenty of variety, undertaken in June (25°C). Despite the slightly steep climb between points 2 and 3, the walk is more ‘very easy’ than ‘moderate’. The houses in Cherlieu are magnificent. Make sure to visit Saint-Hugues Church before setting off. We set off at 3 pm and returned at 6 pm (with a snack in between), just as the church was closing... The description, which we hadn’t looked at, is very well done indeed!

Good evening, and thank you, Yannick, for this walk and your excellent description, which makes it easy to follow this particularly interesting route above Saint-Hughes.
