Joigny-Looze circular with return via the hillsides

Circular route between the town of Joigny and the small village of Looze, passing through the plain on the way out and returning via the hillsides amongst vineyards and woods. Splendid views over the Yonne valley, the surrounding countryside and the town of Joigny.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near 11 Rue Davier, in Joigny.

(S/E) On leaving the Centre Sophie Barat, take Rue du Vicomte opposite, which leads up to the town hall; go round it via Rue du Bourg le Vicomte. At the stop sign, turn left into Rue de la Tour Carrée as far as the cemetery, then right in front of the cemetery onto Boulevard Lesire Lacam. After number 49, turn left and head up Rue Christian Fourré. After 200 metres, turn right onto Rue du Luxembourg.

(1) Opposite the entrance to the Abescat district, turn left and follow the path, then after 100 metres turn right onto Chemin des Ferreux, which continues and climbs. Continue along Chemin du Calvaire and stay on the path that follows it. Enter the woods and reach a three-way junction.

(2) At this junction, turn right. Immediately after Bois Prieur, turn left twice, following the edge of the woodland, and head back down to the path leading to the village of Looze. Arriving above the Looze cemetery, take the path on the left which climbs back up into the woods. Join the Allée de Villefranche.

(3) Turn left onto this lane – this is the route between Joigny and Looze – and continue straight on.

(4) At the three-way junction, take the path on the right (La Charbonnière). At the bottom, turn left along a wire fence, then after 150 metres, turn right and head uphill to reach the hamlet of Mont Chauvot.

(5) Head up the very steep slope to the left through the vineyards. Continue straight ahead along the path between the field and the edge of the woods. At the end of the field, take the path at right angles to the left which descends towards Joigny.

(6) Leave the path and walk down alongside the vineyard for about 300 metres, then take the path on the right and walk back down to the wooden gate (Joigny’s medieval gate). Go round it on the right. After the museum building, immediately turn left onto the small street leading down to the town hall and the Sophie Barat Centre to reach the car park where you started (S/E).

A beautiful hike with magnificent views of the Yonne Valley.
Please note that the descent from point 6 is through vineyards off the beaten track.

Please note: from Waypoint 6 onwards, it’s off-piste.
Otherwise, a very good hike. A shame about the end.

Hello
A lovely walk in glorious weather, partly through the vineyards
We weren’t able to follow the route exactly as marked, particularly the detour via Looze, as there was a discrepancy on the ground.
We still managed 10 km
Thank you
Best regards

We set off from Joigny station and, upon arriving in Looze, continued on to Brion along farm tracks to do the "Rand'Eau" walk, then returned via the same tracks to Looze, where we continued the route and made our way back to the station.
The walk wasn’t always easy, particularly the climb through the vineyards under the hot sun.
The path along Bois Prieur is a strip of wasteland wedged between the forest and the fields. With the harvest finished and ploughing not yet begun, it is currently easier to walk along the edge of the field than on this path.
