Les Ayvelles walks

Surprisingly peaceful gravel pits less than two kilometres from a town with over 50,000 inhabitants. Discover a19th- century fort hidden in the woods.

A short hike that starts in the woods of La Francheville, continues to Saint-Marceau and ends along the banks of the Vence river, passing some industrial wasteland and the remains of water mills.

Rainwater, seepage, river flooding, trees and vegetation have transformed the former gravel pits into a very pleasant walk, in a maze of paths running alongside ponds, each more beautiful than the last, bordering the Meuse with very pretty landscapes as a backdrop and the peaceful murmur of human activity all around.

Beautiful views over the Meuse valley and the surrounding villages, as well as traces of the Second World War, in a place where stone quarrying has shaped its economic history.

A short walk off the beaten track along the banks of the Meuse, between Mézières and Warcq. Suitable for walking or mountain biking. Easy to follow and no significant elevation gain. A short section through the town of Warcq to cross the Meuse and the Sormonne, but most of the route is in the countryside.

Hiking between the river and the forest. Observe the beaver lodges on the two islands of Montcy, on the Meuse, and their tracks along the river. Opportunity to visit the linen museum. In the past, many houses had a wash house and the inhabitants washed the laundry of the bourgeoisie of Charleville. Montcy-Notre-Dame was nicknamed Montcy-les-Linges.

Circular around a bend in the Meuse downstream from Charleville. The start is not far from Place Ducale. Parking is available at the campsite near the footbridge or near Avenue Gustave Gailly. There are some hills and a few high-speed roads to cross.

Route through woods and valleys. Panoramic views over the Gernelle and Issancourt-et-Rumel valleys and, at the end of the hike, over La Grandville.

Walk through the Élan forest amidst splendid spruce and beech trees. In the footsteps of Saint Roger, who founded Élan Abbey in 1148 (now destroyed) and the miraculous fountain that cures infertility and heartbreak. Also in the footsteps of Father Meslier, who served in Étrépigny, Balaives and Butz from 1689 to 1729 and was an atheist and revolutionary.

A route through the woods that alternates between flat terrain at the start, rough terrain on the way back and balcony passages following the undulations and curves of the terrain, with occasional views of the valley through the trees.

The Iges peninsula, formed by a circular bend in the Meuse downstream from Sedan, has always been a crossing point. A secondary Roman road, linking the two major routes from Reims to Cologne and from Reims to Trier, passed through Iges and crossed the Meuse via a paved ford. Following the surrender of 1870, 80,000 French soldiers were crammed onto the peninsula in appalling conditions before being transferred to Germany, hence the name ‘Camp de la Misère’ (Camp of Misery) given to the peninsula.

Between the Mazarin Forest and the Bar Valley, near the village of Saint-Aignan, discover one of the secrets of the Ardennes Canal, which, to avoid detours, passes under the mountain. A lovely little walk to enjoy with the family, making ‘woo-hoo’ sounds to create an echo in the river tunnel.

A bucolic walk through the Ardennes countryside and forest. Enjoyable for families, no major difficulties apart from the distance. Lots of animal tracks, wallows, a few fallen trees across the path, a stream crossing, and a few historic sites.

This hike will take you to the border valley of the Ruisseau du Bois Jean, which was once a hotspot for encounters, fraud and smuggling. The Baraque Laurent, the only one still standing, has now been converted into a lodge for groups. The other three huts have disappeared, but their ruins are still visible.

Enjoy the Vendresse State Forest, remarkable for its many species and rows of Douglas fir trees. Take in the view of the vast Bar valley and the Ardennes canal before descending towards Omicourt. Climb back up to return to the Bar valley. Walk along the Rouge Cogneux and discover its resurgent springs. Return to the "Domaniale".

Hike with no significant elevation gain, suitable for inexperienced walkers. Route mainly on forest trails. Beautiful views of the Semoy and the entrance to Hautes Rivières, at the Robertsart site, at the paragliding launch site. Moderator's note : it seems that private property shortly afterwards (12) makes it necessary to return via the D13, see reviews.

A short, easy walk in the woods of Montcornet.

As part of the art event "Ma dernière chemise" (My Last Shirt) created by Sam Peeters (a resident of Omont), you are invited to walk or cycle from the Omont wash house to the La Horgne wash house. The wash houses will host a temporary exhibition of works of art. These country lanes in the heart of the Crêtes Préardennaises will give you a beautiful glimpse of the region, its forests, its hedgerows and its villages. Please note: this online hike requires two vehicles if you do not want to walk back (18 km round trip).

A forest trail starting from a small village in the Semoy Valley. La Roche au Pihü, Les Dames de Semoy and the Robessart viewpoint offer magnificent views of the valley's relief.

Set in lush green surroundings, this is an easy little route, ideal for getting back into exercise after a period of inactivity.

This hike will take you along forest paths to a spectacular geological site hidden in the heart of the Château-Regnault National Forest.

This hike offers a variety of routes, allowing you to visit Roc la Tour and perhaps even meet the Ladies of Semoy. Changes to the route between (9) and (11) made on 27/7/2025 due to the closure of the Naux footbridge.

For those who enjoy forests and elevation changes, and at the heart of the walk, the Roc la Tour is characterised by its quartzite columns, likely remnants of the Château du Diable. Here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Ardennes forest.

A short, mainly woodland route around Thilay and Naux. You will discover the old Moulin de la Gire mill, the former hamlet of Narbruay, and the Maison du Père Labranche. This walk also includes two viewpoints over Nohan, on the ridge of the Château de Linchamps.

After warming up on the Transsemoysienne, you will walk along the Gire stream and the Chaufour and Nantanru paths to reach the Champ Bernard clearing. You will return via Nohan, then along the left bank of the Semoy. This hike offers two viewpoints over the Semoy valley.

Walk along the lake on the undeveloped shore, then return to the starting point through the forest on the heights of the Bois de Renwez.

This route, located at the beginning of the French Semoy Valley, will give you access to four viewpoints that will allow you to discover Les Hautes Rivières, Nohan and the Crête du Château de Linchamp from different angles. Hikers are rewarded with impressive views of the Semois valley.

The walk from La Croix to Bohan is a 5.2 km loop starting from the church, marked in red, white and red. A steep path leads to a cross offering a superb view of the Semois valley. The route continues through a peaceful forest to the La Cuve viewpoint, then gently descends back to the village. Ideal for lovers of nature and unobstructed views.

La Croix viewpoint and La Cuve viewpoint offer two beautiful views of the Bohan hills, which you can explore before returning via the Sahu woods.

A beautiful approach to a bend in the Semoy and its landscape. Alternating between quiet sections and physically demanding sections Please note: this short but challenging route can only be completed in summer when the Kelhan footbridge is in place.

Also known as: Bohan-Membre Park. The valley is very steep-sided, with steep slopes, but part of the hike will be along the Semois and on the ridges.

An easy and peaceful route following the meanders of the Semois, mainly on cycle paths (RAVeL) and small, quiet roads. The Kelhan footbridge, suspended above the river, offers direct access to peaceful forest trails with superb views of the meandering Semois. Continuing towards Membre, the route takes you to the old railway tunnel connecting the two villages. Approximately 1.5 km long, this disused, dark and cool tunnel impresses with its unique atmosphere. It is advisable to bring a torch. This walk takes you around Lac des Vieilles Forges in the Ardennes.This is a very accessible route, mainly through forest, but you can add more sections along the lake if you wish. It was a little muddy after the previous day's rain (wear appropriate footwear).

Set off on a peaceful 4.5 km walk through a wooded area bordering the Semois. The accessible and well-marked trail winds through the undergrowth, following peaceful riverbanks where you can hear the murmur of the water. Highlight: crossing the Pont de Claies and the Pont Saint-Lambert, which adds a picturesque touch to the route. Suitable for beginners, families and nature photography enthusiasts.

A pleasant, shaded route towards the Belvédère de Membre-sur-Semois and its observation tower, starting from the villages of Vresse-sur-Semois and Laforêt. The first part of the route follows the course of the Semois, then climbs almost the entire height difference to reach the viewpoint. The rest of the route is more peaceful, winding through the Bois de Rabumont on the plateau separating the two villages.
