Between the town centre and the banks of the Meuse in Charleville-Mézières

This is a circular route that can be started from various points (e.g. the Mont Olympe plain). It can be walked by any means (the paths are mostly closed to cars) and in all weathers as the route is tarmacked. It is suitable for children (minimal elevation gain) and offers picnic areas at several points. It is easy to follow.

Description of the walk

Start in front of the Basilica of Mézières (plentiful parking).

(S/E) Take the Promenade des Remparts, turning left before the bridge. Walk past the Tour du Roy and head towards the Town Hall square, keeping the Meuse on your right.

(1) From Mézières Town Hall, a long, straight road heading due north takes you along Avenue d’Arches, under the Pont des Deux Villes (railway bridge) and along Cours Briand. These avenues offer views of the town’s remarkable buildings (the prefecture, the customs house, several Art Deco façades and other notable buildings).

(2) When you reach the end of Cours Briand, by the statue of Charles de Gonzague, take the pedestrian street leading to Place Ducale. Cross this square and head straight across via Rue du Moulin, until you reach the old mill on the banks of the Meuse.

(3) Take the footbridge, cross the Meuse and turn immediately left to join the path along the riverbank.

(4) Walk past the marina, follow the Meuse riverbank through the playground and follow the riverside path to the Pont de Montcy Notre Dame, without crossing the bridge.

.(5) Cross the road and take the footpath opposite. Pass through the lock, turn immediately right and cross a street to join the riverside path.

(6) Pass under two railway bridges in succession. The path then veers left and runs alongside a lock.

(7) Leave the path at the first road bridge, on Avenue des Martyrs de la Résistance, cross the bridge and turn immediately left, before the first tower block. You will then reach the banks of the Meuse and follow it to the end via a footbridge.

(8) Continue through Square Albert1er and pass under the Pont de la Victoire.

(9) Climb the steps on the right and head left towards the basilica via the Quai de la Tour du Roy and the Promenade des Remparts (S/E).

A lovely route, taking in the beautiful town of Charleville-Mézières with its stunning architecture, followed by a lovely walk along the Meuse with a very enriching discovery trail!
Having travelled from Pas-de-Calais to explore the Ardennes, I’m certainly not disappointed and I highly recommend this magnificent discovery walk.
