The Vallon du Ferrand and Lac des Quirlies from the Sarenne road

Lac des Quirlies (2,566 m) and its eponymous glacier are situated on the eastern slope of the Grandes Rousses massif, right at the far end of the Ferrand Valley.
This is a truly beautiful hike that passes through a lush, peaceful valley before reaching a much more rugged landscape around this glacial lake, surrounded by high peaks.
Magnificent panoramic views of the Arves and Écrins massifs and, in the distance, the Vanoise. No technical difficulty apart from the length and elevation gain.

Description of the walk

From Bourg d’Oisans, take the N91 towards Briançon as far as the Chambon Dam.
After crossing the dam, turn left onto the D25 towards Mizoën, then take the D25a towards Clavans.
Drive through Clavans le Bas and continue to the hamlet of Clavans le Haut; at the town hall, turn left towards the Col de Sarenne.
Drive through the hamlet of Le Perron and continue uphill on this road. At the sixth hairpin bend (which turns left), park at the start of the wide track branching off to the right.

(S/E) Leave the car park and follow the track, heading due north-north-east; the track is initially flat then slopes gently downwards to reach the bridge over the Ferrand (signposted).
Note: from here, Lac des Quirlies is signposted at every junction.

(1) Cross the Ferrand torrent amidst the deafening roar of the two waterfalls and begin the short but steep climb up the path leading above the waterfall on the right.
Continue along this path to the next concrete bridge and carry on uphill. You will reach another junction.

(2) Continue straight ahead, still heading towards Lac des Quirlies. Pass behind the Chalet des Bruyères and stay on the path, which becomes relatively flat. Cross several small streams coming from the left, sometimes by fording, sometimes over a plank.
You’ll arrive at the Chalet des Quirlies, which is actually just a ruin (sign). Cross two footbridges on the path and start climbing to reach the Pierre de l’Oiseau.

(3) Turn slightly left and continue the fairly steep climb to the lake. The path leads first through mountain pastures and then over the former terminal moraine of the Quirlies Glacier.

(4) When the lake comes into view, head left. Cross the lake’s outlet to climb up the left lateral moraine of the former glacier.
Note: there isn’t really a path on this moraine, but it’s not difficult to walk across it.
Admire the magnificent views of the lake, the Arves and Écrins massifs, and even the Vanoise in the distance.

(5) Turn back and return to the lake’s outlet.

(4) Continue along the lake’s shores, skirting it for a few metres on the right to enjoy further views and lovely picnic spots.

(6) Return once more to the entrance to the lake.

(4) Begin the descent via the same route as on the way up to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route, apart from the numerous streams.

No technical difficulty: the path is always clearly visible, marked by yellow markings, some newer than others, and the lake is signposted at every junction.
Only the detours on either side of the lake will require you to navigate by sight, but they are still within everyone’s capabilities.

Crossing the numerous streams sometimes involves wading: make sure you have waterproof shoes, as you can easily end up with a foot in the water.

Worth a visit

From the car park, continue along the D25A to the Col de Sarenne and from there, you can reach Alpe d’Huez.

On the other side, visit the village of Besse en Oisans with its typical houses and narrow streets. And from Besse, access the Plateau d’Emparis, on foot or by car, with some lovely hikes in store.

A magnificent hike, especially at this time of year: few people; fields of flowers (and what a scent!) followed by an almost wintry glacial area (a frozen lake surrounded by snow and snowfields).

Note:
- a snowfield blocking the path and deemed ‘too steep’/dangerous 20 metres before reaching the lake, which we simply bypassed on the right (as everyone else did that day)
- a (single) fording point halfway along the route through the schist, which is easy.

The photos don’t do it justice – it’s so beautiful at this time of year.

A lovely hike, with the Ferrand valley making for a seemingly endless return journey. The Quirlies glacier has, sadly, melted away considerably, but there are beautiful views of the Aiguilles d'Arves and the Ecrins. The Pic de la Muzelle... and the waterfalls, as magical as ever.

A lovely hike, but we couldn’t make it all the way up to the lake because of snow patches on the remaining 120-metre climb before reaching the lake (some people took the risk, even with a dog off the lead!!!!). I reckon it’ll be possible in a fortnight’s time. Stunning views of the Ecrins massif, La Meije and Le Rateau.

A magnificent, easy hike; the path is well signposted and well-maintained. The trail runs alongside waterfalls and a torrent all the way to the lake. Once you reach your destination—a majestic glacial amphitheatre—you’ll be treated to unobstructed views of La Meije, the Aiguilles d’Arves, and more. Beautiful flora and numerous large birds of prey. Several bivouac sites are available to shelter from the wind. The subglacial cave is traversed by tunnels. It is difficult to walk around the lake; you have to climb quite high above the glacier tongue and get your feet wet...
