Route of the oratories, chapels and hamlets of Besse-en-Oisans

A route, which can be done with the family, to discover the oratories built by the Bessats in the 19th century. The route follows a sunny slope and passes through two hamlets with typical houses and the village of Besse, which is worth a visit in its own right.
As a bonus, there are some magnificent panoramic views of the Grandes Rousses and Écrins massifs between La Meije and Le Rochail.

Description of the walk

From Bourg-d'Oisans, head towards Briançon. After crossing the Chambon dam, turn left towards Mizoën and then Besse-en-Oisans. At the entrance to the village, park in one of the car parks on the left and then on the right.

(S/E) Leave the car park and enter the village of Besse via the main street.

(1) At the Tourist Office (on the right), take the alley on the left, which leads back a little way. Follow the sign for "Oratoire Saint-Sébastien". Follow the alley, which becomes a path at the last houses, to the chapel.

(2) At the Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs Chapel, take the path that climbs to the right (signposted).
This path crosses the road or track leading up to the sheepfolds several times, but it is clearly visible and well marked at each junction (black arrow on a yellow background on a small post).

(3) A good 50 metres after the Cuchet spring (spring on the right of the path and oratory on the left), the path, which until then had been clearly marked in the schist, disappears and only a trace is visible on the right as it descends directly down the slope.

Follow this trace down to the old hamlet of Cuchet, where there are a few ruins, two isolated oratories (Notre-Dame du Cuchet and Saint-Jean-Baptiste) and a third abandoned oratory set into a section of wall.
From there, follow the signpost and head north-northeast up a steep path that crosses and then runs alongside the track.

(4) At the Saint-Sébastien Oratory, enjoy the panoramic view of the Grandes Rousses massif and the Ferrand valley. Return to the signpost, cross the track and join the hairpin bend below via a path that is not very visible. Shortly after this hairpin bend, take the path on the left (signposted).

(5) A black arrow on a yellow background invites you to continue straight ahead on the path that descends. Ignore it and turn sharply right onto the fairly wide path that leads to the hamlet of Bonnefin.

(6) Continue straight ahead towards the hamlet and pass in front of the Oratory of Saint-François-Régis. The path on the left will be taken on the way back.

(7) In the hamlet of Bonnefin, see the chapel and a few well-restored houses. Turn around.

(6) Take the path on the right. A good hundred metres further on, there is a small site documenting the local extraction of slate.
Continue to the stream, which you can cross via a wooden footbridge, and continue straight ahead through the mountain pastures to the next hamlet, Le Sert.

(8) Take the track on the right that crosses it. A few metres after the Oratoire Saint-Jacques (on the right), take the path that descends to the left at the signpost.
In the mountain pastures, pass in front of the Saint-Roch Oratory and continue to the Gay campsite (Saint-Jérôme Oratory). When you reach the Emparis plateau road, take it on the right towards the village of Besse.

(9) At the Croix de Saint-Marc, take the path that climbs up to the mountain pastures on the right and follow it to the Route du Sert.
At the crossroads with this road, follow the road downhill to the left. Pass the Croix de Saint-Eutrope and then the Croix de Saint-Nicolas and you will see the village of Besse.

(10) There are many routes you can take to cross the village of Besse and return to the car park where you started. Take the small tarmac road behind the church and then choose a narrow alleyway that winds its way to the left between the traditional houses.
At some point, you will reach the main street, which will take you out of the village and back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No particular difficulties, the trail is generally well visible and well marked (except at point (5)).
There is a spring (unregulated water) at point (3) and a fountain in the hamlet of Bonnefin next to the chapel. Perhaps there is also a fountain in Le Sert that I didn't see!

In October, there are still flocks of sheep and cows in some mountain pastures, and you sometimes have to cross fences...

Worth a visit

Be sure to visit the oratories along the route. The Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is quite "modern". The one in the hamlet of Bonnefin is more traditional. Both were locked.

At the point (3), note the geological formations linked to erosion on the almost vertical layers of schist. The soft layers have been washed away, leaving only the hardest slabs standing tall towards the sky like parallel rows of gravestones bristling along the mountain ridges!
The same phenomenon can also be seen in places around the Emparis plateau car park.

Be sure to visit the entire hamlet of Bonnefin. At the bottom of the hamlet, on the path that descends to the left towards Besse, a sign presents the typical architecture of the local houses ("Architecture without frills"!).

And of course, a visit to the village of Besse (listed in the Inventory of Buildings of France) is a must! Leave the main street and wander through the narrow paved slanting streets (narrow stone alleys) between the local stone houses with their gently sloping roofs, which are often very well restored.

A pleasant walk through mountain pastures. Discover the oratories around Besse en Oisans, passing through two hamlets with traditional houses. A short detour from the path before reaching the hamlet of Sert due to cows on the trail, but thanks to the app I was able to find my way back. Bonus: magnificent views of the Grandes Rousses and Écrins mountains (Meije, Rochail)

We did the route on 7 June 2025 because the weather was unstable, we had good visibility and this choice was a good compromise. We had a problem on the discovery path north of Le Sert because there were cows with their calves grazing in the fields. They were sitting on the path and didn't want to move, almost threatening us.

A very beautiful hike, half of which is covered in snow (November 2023). The first part is quite steep, especially on snow-covered ground. Consider bringing walking sticks. You can shorten the hike at the end by returning directly via the road from the last hamlet you pass through.

An interesting route with magnificent views. The QR code terminals provide useful explanations and the information panels in front of the oratories are informative.

A beautiful route combining historical interest, panoramic views and wildlife encounters. In addition to sheep and cows, we saw vultures, marmots and a female black grouse!
At the start, there were indeed several sheep nets to cross. We witnessed the birth of a lamb on a path. I thought that ewes that were about to lamb were kept in a dedicated area. At least that's how it was where I lived in the 70s and 80s! A little further on, there were hundreds, even thousands of sheep, and not a shepherd in sight. This pastoralism is surprising; it's not how I remember it
It was the opening day of the hunting season, so they must have swapped their sticks for guns!
There were lots of well-maintained oratories. And the hamlet of Bonnefin has been beautifully restored.

Hike undertaken on a hot day in August. Quite a challenging climb due to the heat and the elevation gain.
The oratories and abandoned hamlets bear witness to the beliefs and harsh living conditions of the inhabitants over the centuries.
Splendid views!
