Climb up to the pass via Alpe d'Huez or Clavans le Haut and park in the car park at the pass. There is an information board in the car park, and the first hike described is Clos Chevaleret.
(S/E) Take a section of the road that descends from the pass towards Clavans le Haut, Clavans le Bas and Besse. After about 150 metres, turn left onto the path that branches off to the left. Yellow signs will guide you to Clos Chevaleret. Follow this path.
(1) You are now on the more pleasant part of the path as it is slightly less steep. Although there are very few markings (rare yellow markings), it is easy to follow as it is well marked by the footpaths.
(2) Cross the two footbridges, remembering to wet your hands, feet and head or fill your water bottles in summer at these two superb waterfalls. Then descend Clos Chevaleret, skirting it to the north.
(3) Near the Clos Chevaleret buildings, you will find a signpost indicating the intersection of two paths. Take the one that descends towards Le Perron. Descend until you reach the noisy Ferrand torrent.
(4) Once you reach the stream, turn right downhill and follow its right bank. Follow the path and descend to a place called Pont Ferrand. Cross the concrete bridge, which offers superb views and sounds of the waterfalls upstream.
(5) After crossing the concrete bridge, climb the small path and then take the wide path that climbs up to the right towards the Col de Sarenne and join the Col road.
(6) Take the almost straight road uphill for about 1.2 km until the next bend.
(7) Leave the road at the hairpin bend to the right and take the small path that climbs opposite, which is a shortcut to the pass without having to take the tedious road.
(8) Once you reach the road again, you are very close to the Col de Sarenne. Finish your hike by taking the road again for about 700 metres and its two hairpin bends to reach the Col de Sarenne and its car park (S/E).
