Head to Lac des Settons and park in the large public car park at Les Settons (free), situated at the northernmost tip, before the dam (toilets available).
(S/E) From the car park, walk _carefully_ along the road running alongside the Seine on the lake’s shore, heading westwards. You can get a view overlooking the lake by crossing the road. Turn right onto the path leading up to Morégnon, situated just before the restaurant Les Terrasses. This is the GR®13. Immediately after the building, turn left. At the end of the cul-de-sac, take the path until you reach a Fork in the road.
(1) Leave the GR® and keep to the right, following this path – marked in yellow – straight on heading due north, ignoring any side paths. It leads onto the Route de La Tourbière, where the GR®13 passes through.
(2) Continue straight ahead along the GR® on a tarmac road which, at the end of a straight stretch, near a meadow, bends right twice and becomes a dirt track. Shortly afterwards, turn left onto a path closed to cars and motorised two-wheelers. You’ll emerge onto a tarmac road and cross, on the right-hand side, the hamlet of Les Crots de Fonteny.
(3) Continue through woodland, crossing several damp gullies and a ford. You’ll reach a junction at a place called Le Pré Naudot.
(4) Head up the GR® on the left until you reach the D292.
(5) Follow it, _carefully_, northwards. You can cut across two bends via marked footpaths. Cross a bridge over the Caillot and arrive at Metz Garnier, a suburb of Gouloux (factory, eco-museum, well). On either side of the street are the Marchand clog-making workshop and a few structures carved out of the rock. At the next crossroads, with an old well in the centre, turn left.
(6) Still on the GR® 13, continue _carefully_ along the road. Just before a bend to the right, leave the main road by turning left onto a path (marked GR®13 and pilgrim signs). After passing through a hollow, keep to the right at a junction (the stream guides you to the right) and reach the Saut de Gouloux and the ruins of the mill after crossing a ford just before.
(7) Walk past the mill ruins and follow the Ruisseau Caillot on level ground, keeping to the right. Follow this route to a bridge over the stream, just before the River La Cure and the Pont Dupin (an iron monument with a bench).
(8) Turn left uphill, following the River La Cure (signposted to the right), until you reach a flat area overlooking its turbulent waters (a lovely viewpoint). Continue left along the nature trail, which descends and then climbs via wooden log steps. You’ll emerge at a T-junction with an information board.
(9) Turn right and carry on straight ahead to reach the centre of the village of Nataloup via the Route du Bois de l’Abbesse (note the remarkable beech tree to the right of the path, just outside the woodland).
(10) From a wayside cross, turn left onto the Chemin des Bouffées to head south and reach Palmaroux via the Chemin des Boquerelles. On Rue des Hirondelles, turn right at a house, heading towards a gate in the distance. Keep to the right onto a grassy path leading downhill.
(11) At the cross (turn round to see it), continue for a few metres to the left to join the Route du Bois de Serre. Turn right, leave the village, then turn left (before a crossroads) to wade across the Pré Thomas stream. Walk back up to the road, opposite number 2 in the hamlet of Le Gué de Largenne.
(12) Turn left at the crossroads to follow Rue des Deux Lavoirs uphill, heading due south, then, at the Fork in the road, turn left towards Champ Gazon. Continue along the same route via Route de La Tourbière.
(13) Leave this road on the left, onto a stony track, shortly after leaving the hamlet (yellow markings). Opposite the sheds, keep to the left as you climb and head for a crossroads.
(14) Turn sharp right onto the track that runs alongside a fir forest; it curves to the left and leads back onto Route de la Tourbière. Turn left at this junction (yellow markings).
(15) As the road veers off to the left, turn right (GR®13) to pass through the Tourbières du Morvan Regional Nature Reserve. At a Fork in the road, keep left (GR® and pilgrim markings).
(1) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to the car park where you started, at the northern tip of Lac des Settons (S/E).
