The Salt Well of Tartonne

This easy hike will take you to the remarkable church of Tartonne, the unusual Puits Salé (salt well) and its protective dyke, and some of the hamlets of Tartonne. Superb views of the Asse and Clumanc valleys.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Robines stopover lodge, follow the Route du Petit Défend (D19) to the right for 150 m, then turn left. Continue on the track that passes in front of Notre-Dame d'Entraigues.

(1) The church of Notre-Dame d'Entraigues takes its name from the Latin inter aquas (between the waters), due to its position between the Asse and the Torrent de la Salaou. Continue on the GRP® until you reach a fork at Puits Salé.

(2) Formerly exploited with a remarkable dyke protecting the well from flooding by the torrent. Leave the GRP® and turn left. You will arrive at the hamlet of Laugiers.

(3) Take the opportunity to cool off at the fountain. Continue on the Route du Col (D219) for a little over 50 m.

(4)Leave the road on the right via a track towards Le Viable. Arrive at the hamlet of Le Viable.

(5) Continue north-west along a path (Les Sarres).

(6) Head south downhill towards the hamlet of Le Thouron. Note the pear trees at the start of the descent. Arrive at the hamlet of Le Thouron.

(7) Keep right, heading west, along a path that then turns south, then west again. You will reach the main hamlet of Tartonne.

(8) Take the opportunity to cool off at the fountain. Head south on the D219, then right onto the D19. After 150 m, turn left towards the stopover lodge (S/E).

A very peaceful and easy walk, where I stumbled upon a small spot rich in diverse wildlife, including butterflies and grasshoppers, between 5 and 6 o'clock at the end of September
