Description of the walk

Access: Oinville is located north of the Seine, on the D913 road between Meulan-en-Yvelines and Vétheuil.

Start: Oinville-sur-Montcient town hall. Parking is available either in the courtyard behind the town hall or along Rue de Gournay, opposite the town hall.

Yellow signposts

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, go up Rue de Gournay on the right. After an ochre-coloured building on the right, turn right onto the path that leads to the Lavoir de Gournay (information sign). Pass under the roof of the wash house and continue along a grassy path. Follow the upstream arm of the Montcient river on your left, ignoring the paths on the right and a metal footbridge on the left. At a crossroads, continue straight ahead on the path, which has now been stabilised. You will come out onto a street; follow it to the right. Cross the downstream branch of the river (wash house) and, at the end, turn left onto the D913 road. Follow this road for about 300 metres and leave the village.

(1) Take the first bridge on the left, cross the downstream arm of the Montcient again and follow the Chemin du Moulin Brûlé between two fences. At the mill, cross the upstream arm of the river and turn right. Follow the mill's watercourse on your right, then leave it and turn left onto the path. At a three-way junction (not shown on the map), turn right and, at the next crossroads, turn right (west) along the edge of the meadow on your left and the woods on your right. Make two quick turns, first left then right, to cross the meadow. Enjoy the pleasant walk along the edge of the woods on your left, then through the undergrowth. Leave the woods, walk along a meadow on your right and you will come to a T-junction (where twoPR® trails meet).

(2) Turn left and head east between the fields until you reach a road. Turn right at an acute angle and follow the road for about 400 metres. After a slight left turn and at the foot of a "Danger" sign on the left, leave the road and turn left onto a path that enters the Bois des Cailloux. Head south between the woods on your left and a hedge bordering a meadow on your right, ignoring vague paths on your left. At a fork, turn right and, after a few metres, ignore a path on your right (not shown on the map). Continue south-southwest through the woods, climbing gently and steadily. At the edge of the woods (elevation 153), ignore the path that branches off to the left (the purple border on the map is not up to date) and continue between the fields until you reach a small road. Follow the road to the left uphill for about 300 metres.

Red and white markings

(3) At the top of the hill, continue along the road and pass under the high-voltage power lines. Enter the woods and, after a few metres, take a path on the left that enters the woods. Ignore a path on the left (not shown on the map). At the next junction, turn left and, at the fork immediately ahead, turn right (GR®2sign). Descend gently and stay on the main path, heading east-northeast, ignoring any paths branching off to the sides.

(4) Turn left (north) and continue downhill. Follow the main path, ignore a path on the left, turn east-northeast then north. At the next crossroads (elevation 137), turn right, note the arrow on the left indicating to first turn right then left 300 m further on, and exit the woods. Follow a field path north-northeast for about 250 m.

No signposts

(5) At the T-junction, turn right and at the next junction, contrary to the previous arrow, continue straight ahead. Cross a wood and continue east-southeast with a hedge on your right, then between the fields and ignore the paths on either side.

Yellow signpost

Ignore a field path coming from the right and note a yellow marker on an isolated tree on the left. Continue along the edge of the woods on your left.

Yellow + red and white markings

Ignore a path coming from the left and continue along the edge. At the next fork, turn left and walk between a hedge on your left and a wood on your right.

Yellow markings

(6) At the corner of a property (gate on the left), turn left and descend along a hedge on your left, then between two rows of trees. At the bottom of the descent, turn left and cross the hamlet of Dalibray, turning right. After passing an imposing house on the left, ignore the path that branches off to the right and continue on the tarmac road. Turn left onto the small road, ignore a path that branches off to the right and climb a steep slope. Continue on the slightly uphill road.

Red and white markings

(7) At the reservoir (small wooden cross), leave the road as it turns right and continue straight ahead on a grassy path. Pass under the high-voltage power lines again and, at the next crossroads, continue straight ahead with a fenced meadow on your left. The path becomes narrower and descends steeply between two hedges. At the first houses, the path gives way to a street. At the crossroads, turn left and continue downhill. At the next fork, turn left onto Rue de l'Église and follow it for about 50 metres.

(8) Leave the road and go down a small staircase on the right. Continue slightly downhill on a narrow gravel lane (not shown on the 1:25,000 map but visible with a stronger zoom). Go through a chicane, cross a stream on a simple wooden footbridge, then cross a stream on a footbridge with railings. After a second chicane, follow a street on the left and you will quickly reach the town hall (S/E).

Practical information

Hiking boots are recommended, especially in wet weather.

No drinking water or shops for refreshments have been identified along the route.

In general, signposting is sparse and, between fields, non-existent due to a lack of support. A 1:25,000 map is therefore essential (at least the one accompanying this description).

Additional information:
This short hike can be combined with the hike "La Cave aux Fées et les Côteaux de la Montcient".
- Medium version (14.5 km) - Start with the other hike and go to its point (7). Then follow this hike from its point (2). However, this route does not pass by the Moulin Brûlé.
- Long version (19 km) - Do both walks, in any order. This means you'll do the section between the town hall (S/E) and Le Boquet (2) twice, once in each direction.

Hike completed by the author on 19 November 2016.

In the nearby area

- Wash houses and pleasant walk along the Montcient, between (S/E) and (1).
- Moulin Brûlé (19th-20th century), after (1): the building appears to be undergoing restoration, and the mill's watercourse and wheel are still clearly visible.
- Beautiful and imposing residence in Dalibray, after (6).
- Several beautiful views of the countryside.

Very muddy in the woods but varied route. I recommend the charcuterie and cheese platters from Guillaume's cheese shop at the finish line near the town hall. A great way to end this hike.

Oinville is nice, as are the hamlets in the area. However, the woods and fields are very uninspiring. The high-voltage power lines are really ugly and can be seen from far away. The woods are also very unwelcoming, with "private hunting grounds" everywhere, surrounded by degraded ploughed fields – everything that is wrong with French agriculture. It's a shame.

Country walk, done on Sunday 10 April in good weather, few paved roads, mainly through woods and countryside.
Very pleasant, overall the description is accurate ( (5) I didn't see the yellow markings on the tree, and at the next sign indicating to leave the path on the left, you need to take the path that leads to the property below).
I recommend this route.

A pleasant route if the sun is shining. We did it on a grey day but it was still enjoyable. In wet weather, wear wellies and walking sticks as some of the paths through the fields are very muddy. Beautiful unobstructed views. The route is in the peaceful countryside yet close to towns.

A beautiful hike that alternates between forest and fields. Very muddy at the moment, especially between points 5 and 6.

The Montcient Valley is definitely a beautiful place for hiking. This one is perfect: alternating shade and light, woods and fields, just right for this September Sunday that still feels like summer.
The description is perfect, I only used the app once. The terms "left hand, right hand, turn your back" are really the most relevant and useful.
Between bridge 8 and the return to the starting point, there are benches for picnics, snacks or just a break.
It took us 2 hours and 15 minutes, walking at a good pace but without pushing ourselves.

A truly beautiful walk with the striking Montcient structure feeding the water wheel of the Moulin de Brulé.
A country stroll through fields and forests.
Definitely worth doing again when the rapeseed is in bloom.

A very beautiful route, enjoyed by all participants, and it must be added that the weather was perfect. I extended it a little to reach the usual distance we usually cover. A very pleasant hike, hilly, partly shaded... A short distance on the road, which can be modified if desired.
