Lionel’s forgotten paths

This is a route for walkers who enjoy charming, forgotten little paths that make you forget you’re only 50 km from Paris; however, the route is sometimes unclear, requiring careful attention (Visorando app recommended). These paths are not always regularly maintained: bare legs are not recommended.

Description of the walk

Car park at Oinville-sur-Montcient Town Hall, Rue de Gournay (please note, the car park is reserved for the market on Friday mornings).

(S/E) Set off along the Chemin des Moines in front of No. 24 Rue de Gournay. At the end of the path, turn right onto a road and immediately left at a sharp angle onto a path. At thefirst fork in the path, keep to the left. At the end of the path, turn right. Follow the main path as it curves to the left, leaving a grassy track that goes straight ahead.

(1) When you reach another path, turn right and continue to a small road. Take this on the left, then immediately turn onto the path on the right. At the next junction, take the grassy path on the right which descends towards the village. At the first houses, the path becomes a street. Follow it straight on, ignoring two streets coming from the right. Walk past Saint Séverin Church, ignore a street leading down from the left and arrive at a crossroads.

(2) Turn right into Rue de Gournay; after 100 m, take thefirst path on the left and go down to a metal footbridge over the Montcient. Turn left and follow the river for 500 m; at thefirst junction of paths, continue straight ahead and then take thefirst path on the left (opposite nos. 1bis and1ter) which passes between two houses. You will immediately arrive on Rue de Bachambre.

(3) Cross the street and take the small path opposite which climbs between two houses. Then take a narrow path on the right which runs alongside a fenced-off meadow. At the end of the path, join a grassy track and follow it to the right. At the next crossroads, continue straight on and follow this track to the end, for 1 km.

(4) Turn right and, at the next crossroads, turn right again. Ignore a signposted path branching off to the left and begin a long descent to the Moulin de la Chatarde. When you reach the mill wall, take a track to the right (do not cross the river) which follows the Montcient. Continue straight on to the Moulin Brulé.

(5) Continue along the Allée du Moulin Brulé to the road. Follow the road to the right, pass a restaurant and take a path on the right at no. 649. After 50 m, follow a narrow track to the left which begins with a small footbridge. At the end, follow Rue de Bachambre to the left and then turn right onto Route du Vexin.

(6) After 50 m, at a bus stop (just before No. 52), take a narrow path up to the left. At the top, turn right onto a path that narrows as it enters the woods. At the first crossroads, continue straight ahead. After 500 m, the path bends to the right and descends to a housing estate; head back up to the left. The path runs behind some gardens, then enters a wood. At the top of a hill, keep to the right to reach a street. Continue straight ahead.

(7) Take thefirst path going uphill to the left. Cross a small road and continue straight ahead; then, at the end of the path, turn right onto a wide path. At a fork, take thefirst path on the right (in front of an aerial) which goes downhill.

(8) Just before reaching a road, take a path on the right. The path becomes tarmac (behind the Moulin de Néranval) and, at the next fork, keep right. Follow this straight road which runs alongside the Montcient, passes behind the Moulin Gaillard and leads back to the car park (S/E).

We did this walk starting from point 2. It really is a beautiful route along narrow paths you wouldn’t expect to find, and they’re very picturesque in early spring. On the way back, we followed it up with “Les Bois de la Chartre from Oinville-sur-Montcient”, which starts from the same place, making for a total walk of around 18 km.
Thank you for these wonderful discoveries.

I went for a recce of your walk on Saturday (21 March 2026). I enjoyed it from start to finish! Even the high-voltage pylons didn’t bother me! I did it in fantastic weather and the views were simply magnificent.
I’ll be suggesting this walk to my walking club very soon, and I hope the walkers who join us will appreciate the charm of the ‘forgotten paths’ as much as I did.
Thanks Fred for this gem!

A very beautiful walk. The banks of the Montcient are truly charming, as are the little paths through the villages. Walkers and artists alike will find plenty of places to capture on this lovely walk. The only downside I can find to this hike is that from point 1 to point 2, all you can see are the high-voltage power lines, which are... well... very ugly. So I'll do it again... starting from point 2.

Once you've passed the high-voltage power lines, the hike is really very pleasant and varied (undergrowth, villages, paths along streams, etc.).
Definitely worth doing again and again.

A beautiful hike that takes you on a grand tour around the lovely town of Oinville, between Montcient, the burnt mill, the woods and surrounding farmland. Very diverse and beautiful landscapes.
Thanks to Fred for this route.

I’m sorry you found it difficult to follow this route description. It’s true, as I mentioned in the introduction, that choosing to walk along little-used paths doesn’t make things any easier, but I always have members of my walking group try out the route before publishing it. In this case, I received no comments during those trials. So it is entirely possible that I may have made a mistake somewhere, but I am surprised that the entire description is incorrect. To be sure, I will ask other people to retrace the route in the coming days and will make any necessary corrections.

The route does not correspond to the description at all; it goes far off course and makes us take lots of detours and U-turns.
What a shame!
