Access by car
On the D618 (formerly the RN20), between Garrabet and Mercus, turn left (heading south) towards Croquié. Drive up the hairpin bends; the road is good but very narrow. When you reach Croquié, turn left immediately (signposted "Les Brougues" and "Fourcat") onto the small road that continues in tight hairpin bends. Park in the car park at the Les Brougues picnic area (altitude 1,200 m).
(S/E) From the car park, take the path eastwards and you will come to a fork at an altitude of 1255 metres at the Col de Traucadou.
(1) Take the track on the right, south-south-east, which is very well marked. Continue through the forest; the path cuts across the bends in the track and it is easy to follow the route. At an altitude of 1,500 m, after about 45 minutes, you will reach open ground.
(2) Continue eastwards through the ferns, where there are views on three sides. The edge of the forest extends to the left of the path to the north and shelters a tiny orri (altitude 1,570 m) where two people can barely stand.
(3) At an altitude of 1,660 m, after crossing an electric fence, there is a small rocky promontory on the right, to the south, which acts as a natural viewpoint. You can either walk along the fence or take the track.
Reach the Pic de la Lauzate fork near the 1800 m mark.
(4) Continue climbing to the right and reach the cowherd's hut (altitude 1,850 m), with its enclosure, clearly visible on the left, to the north. On the other side, to the south, below, is the annex to the hut: an orri with a stone bench. Magnificent view of the Ariège mountain range.
(5) Continue the steep climb, which eventually levels out onto a wide grassy ridge, signalling your arrival at the summit of Mont Fourcat at an altitude of 2,001 metres.
(6) The descent follows the same route back to the starting point (S/E).
