Le Mangiabo

Mont Mangiabo, clearly visible from Breil sur Roya, entices hikers to conquer it. This climb, which is not technically difficult, offers a unique 360° panorama.
To the south, the Mediterranean stretches from San Remo to Cannes, passing through Nice and the Var estuary.
To the north, the peaks of the Mercantour will catch your eye.

Description of the walk

The start of this hike is at Col de Brouis. (D2204 connecting Breil sur Roya to Sospel)

Yellow markings

(S/E) From the small car park at Col de Brouis, take the track called "Route de l'Armée des Alpes"

(1) Follow this gravel road for about one kilometre, pass an old barracks that has been converted into a farm, and reach marker 125.

(2) Continue along the Route de l'Armée des Alpes until you reach the first bend. Leave it on your right and take the Baisse de Levens path until you reach a stream.

(3) Although this stream is dry, the floods during Storm Alex destroyed the crossing.
You will need to descend a few metres to find a temporary crossing. Return to the trail via this makeshift access point. Return to Baisse de Levens by following this well-marked trail.

(4) At Baisse de Levens, head north-north-west and take the Mangiabo trail (signposted). Begin the ascent, first through the undergrowth, on a trail with several hairpin bends. After a turn to the west, continue on more open terrain along a ridge and reach a small pass at the foot of Mont Béoulet.

(5) Once you reach this small grassy area, the trail is not clearly visible for about a hundred metres. Look carefully at the eastern flank of Mangiabo and locate the first clearly visible hairpin bends.
Keep heading north-west to easily find this path. Continue climbing, first in bends, then along a gentle slope below the Magiabo ridge. After a bend heading due west, return to a small pass marked by marker 144.

(6) From here, on theGR®52, reach the summit of Magiabo, which is clearly visible.

(7) Enjoy the 360° panorama. To the south, you can see the Mediterranean coast from Bordighera to Antibes. To the north, the view extends to the peaks of the Mercantour.
The return journey follows the same route as the outward journey to (S/E).

Thank you for your feedback.
For a circular route passing through Baisse de la Linière, then Baisse de Fighiéra, followed by a steep climb to Baisse de Levens, you can expect a 500-metre elevation gain and a 500-metre elevation loss (a total of approximately +1,500 metres and -1,500 metres) and a total distance of 18 to 19 kilometres.
I don't know if the path is passable in winter.
If you have any photos taken at Mangiabo on the snow-covered peaks of Mercantour, you can add them to this hike. Thank you in advance.
You can clearly see the Gélas, the Bégo, the Grand Capelet, the Malédie and even the Argentera.

First part in a very steep forest. Crossing under the summit, on grassy paths where you have to be careful not to slip (between 5 and 6). Exceptional 360-degree view at the summit.
Walk done in January. I didn't meet anyone.
Easy climb in 2½ hours.
It's a shame that the descent is via the same route. A circular route seems possible via the Baisse de Linière and Baisse de Fighiéra. Next time.

A very beautiful and varied hike, with a first section through the woods that is very pleasant in summer. The second section is more flowery, with beautiful lavender. The last section is grassy, leading to the summit where you can enjoy a beautiful 360-degree panorama. The walking time indicated is accurate, but you should of course add on time for breaks and picnics.

A magnificent hike that is not to be missed! Beautiful panoramic views along the trail and from the summit of Mangiabo. I also recommend visiting the nearby summit of Gonella, which offers breathtaking views.

This hike is not difficult. The stream crossing has been repaired with stone steps.
There is just one steep climb in the first part of the hike to the small pass at an altitude of 1,442 metres, followed by a more gradual second part.
There is a beautiful view from the summit.

Hello @Alti,
Thank you for all this additional information. On the Roya side, it seems less challenging than on the Castillon road. It's true that this summit is ideally located, and to be thorough, I would add that it is also easily accessible from Authion or Cabannes Vieilles. At the summit, I met hikers who had climbed the ridge from Cabannes Vieille.
Best regards,
Dominique.
