The start of this hike is at Col de Brouis. (D2204 linking Breil-sur-Roya to Sospel)
Yellow markings throughout the route.
(S/E) From the small car park at Col de Brouis, join the track known as the “Route de l’Armée des Alpes”
(1) Follow this stony track for about a kilometre, passing an old barracks converted into a farm, until you reach marker 125.
(2) Continue along the Route de l'Armée des Alpes until the first bend. Leave it on your right, take the Baisse de Levens path and arrive at a stream.
(3) Although this stream is dry, the floods caused by Storm Alex have destroyed the crossing.
You will need to descend a few metres to find a temporary crossing. Return to the path via this makeshift crossing. Head back to the Baisse de Levens by following this well-marked path.
(4) Heading south-southeast, continue to a fork. Take the left-hand path (signpost with a yellow arrow). Follow this pleasant, almost flat path through the woods until you reach another junction.
(5) Ignore the path on the left, which is for the descent only. Continue eastwards and start a circular route to come out facing the ridge leading to the summit.
(6) Leave the path on the left and follow the ridge until you reach the first combat block. Explore the various blocks with their imposing surfaces, topped with gun turrets. At the last block, reach the summit of Mont Gros.
(7) From Mont Gros, return to the junction with the path designated for the descent.
(5) Turn right onto the descending path. At Marker 138, turn 90° and, after about a hundred metres, begin the winding descent to Marker 137.
(8) Turn right, head back to marker 136 and the Col de Brouis road. Take the D2204 and drive carefully back up to the Col de Brouis car park (S/E).
