The start of this hike is at Place Biancheri in Breil-sur-Roya
(S/E). From Place Biancheri, head south towards the Sainte-Catherine Chapel (former chapel of the White Penitents) and take Ruelle Saint Catherine. Turn left and you will come out onto Breil's main street, Rue Pasteur.
Go to the end of this street and turn onto Rue Marius Cauvin, at the dam on the Roya. Continue until you reach a wash house.
(1) Continue immediately to the right, taking the Valléen path. Walk along the path, admiring the Saint-Antoine l'Ermite Chapel, then the Porte de Gènes. After a bend that follows the circular Roya loop, you will arrive at an intersection.
(2) Leave the Cruella trail on your left and continue south to marker 105.
(3) Take the path on the left towards Vésaire and Vallon de Carleva. Gradually enter the valley and return to the hamlet of Vésaire, characterised by its pretty, well-maintained terraces.
See the practical information section: map advice.
(4) Continue along this path, which has numerous steps and contours, overlooking the rocky walls of the valley. Follow this path, which alternates between shaded and open sections. Begin the descent to reach a beautiful stream, marking the start of the Carleva Canyon. Note that this stream is not the Carleva but a small tributary that joins the Carleva 200 metres further on.
(5) Cross the stream and head south, climbing slightly until you reach the Carleva.
(6) Cross the Carleva and head west, climbing slightly to the ruins of Serre de Pozzo.
(7) Leave the path that climbs eastwards, pass in front of the remains of the dwelling, and stay on the yellow-marked path heading south-east. Cross two more streams to reach Serre Cabanasso.
(8) Cross two more streams and climb a little further to reach the top of the rocky ridge. You will arrive at marker 107.
(9) At the marker, leave the path climbing towards La Colette and take the path on the right, which descends towards Breil via Praghiou and Rougna. Continue through a beautiful forest until you reach a farm.
(10) Follow the path, still marked in yellow, and reach the Praghiou track at a place called Rougna.
(11) Continue along the track to the first bend and look for marker 104.
(12) Descend the winding path to Carleva, crossing the pretty bridge above a blue pool. Take the trail, first westwards to leave the valley, then northwards to find marker 105.
(3) Return to Place Biancheri by retracing your steps (S/E).
