Cruella Tower

A pleasant short walk above Breil-sur-Roya. Once you reach the Cruella Tower, you’ll enjoy a superb panorama of the Roya Valley, the peaks around the Col de Brouïs (Mangiabo, Cime de Bosc...) and a bird’s-eye view of the village of Breil.

Description of the walk

The start of this walk is at Place Biancheri, near the “Le Roya” hotel.

(S/E) From Place Biancheri, heading south, take the small street between the Crédit Agricole and the Sainte-Catherine Chapel (formerly the Chapel of the White Penitents). Turn left and you’ll come out onto Breil’s main street, Rue Pasteur.

Walk to the end of this street and turn into Rue Marius Cauvin at the dam on the Roya. Continue until you reach a wash house. Immediately on the right, take the path known as the "Valéen". Walk along, admiring the Chapel of Saint Anthony the Hermit, then the Porte de Gènes. After a bend that follows the circular course of the Roya, you’ll reach a junction.

(1) Turn left onto the Sentier des Irlandais and begin the ascent towards the Tour de Cruella. The climb is quite steep: a 150-metre elevation gain over 500 metres. Enjoy the panoramic view over the Roya valley and the peaks surrounding the Col de Brouïs (Cime de Gonella, Mangiabo, Cime du Bosc).

(2) At the foot of the tower, facing north, begin the descent via a series of gentle switchbacks before joining theGR®52Atrail.

(3) At the junction with theGR®52A, turn left towards Breil-sur-Roya (signpost and marker 6). Continue along theGR® to the entrance to the village. In Rue Ciappera, turn left, then take the first right to return to Place Biancheri (S/E).

Worth a visit

- Breil-sur-Roya
- Cruella Tower: the name ‘Cruella’ comes from ‘crivella’ in the Breil dialect (meaning ‘bird of prey’). It was built in the 11th century by the Counts of Ventimiglia and watched over the town of Breil-sur-Roya for several centuries.
- Chapel of Saint Anthony the Hermit: this chapel, built very close to the Gate of Genoa, allowed travellers to say their prayers before crossing the ramparts.
- Gate of Genoa: for defence, the village was surrounded by ramparts and had three entrances. The Gate of Genoa to the south, the Gate of Turin to the north and the Gate of Nice to the west. Only the Gate of Genoa remains today.
- Roya Valley.
- The Irish Trail: the path leading to the Cruella Tower from the south owes its name to a group of Irish volunteers who restored it.

The Irish Trail on the second half of the route is more challenging than expected, and those with a fear of heights should take care: the path is narrow and close to the edge!
Rain and runoff have damaged certain sections, so you need to be very careful – or even turn back if you’re too scared...

Starting from the end and heading up to the Cruella Tower via this path both on the way there and back (so not doing the circular route): access is easier and safer!
